What's Wrong With a Beretta 92 FS?

I was carrying an M10 38 special and two M60D machine guns until I was issued the M9

Because I was the fat guy, I got the 60. You figure a squad of 10 had 10 sidearms, 10 M16s, 2 M203s, and an M60. We had one M2 for the company on the one deuce and a half we had.

Oh yeah, the females had the M10s when I first got there. They ended up transitioning to the 1911

All Air crew was issued the M10s they figured if we were injured in the crash we could still load a revolver. But that reasoning went out the window with the M9?!?

I didn't like the M9 when I qualed it in the Marines, but it was the second time I had ever shot a handgun. The particular example was kinda junky, the DA and SA trigger pulls were junk, the grip felt huge, and I found it hard to translate rifle fundamentals to handgun fundamentals. Ended up passing qual, but was smack in the middle of the lowest qualifying score range (Marksman, aka "Pizza Box", aka you suck, but at least you passed).

Years later and with some handgun competence under my belt, I got to shoot a Beretta 92 and I liked it a lot more. I realized that most of what I thought I hated about the M9 was just inexperience with handguns. There's a lot to love in the Beretta 92. It's accurate. The SA trigger is no 1911, but it's good. Controls are ergonomic, the balance is nice, and its weight means recoil is very light. As far as the DA trigger, it's also good, but not for me since the huge grip makes the trigger reach too long while gripping the pistol properly. Definitely fits L and XL sized gloves better than M.

I was issued a 92F, I shot thousands of rounds through it and never had it misfire once. I didnt care for the size of it though.

I have one. Yeah, it's mostly a safe queen, but I don't consider it a bad gun. Got it mostly because it's just so damn sexy.

That and it's John McClane's gun. Yippee kay yea, mother fuckers.

At first we had 4 door Chevelles with 350s under the hood. During the gas crunch of '79 they took those away and gave us 4 door Mavericks with straight 6s under the hood.

So bad every time you turned on the lights and siren the battery light came on.

We were "lucky". We had a joint assignment with an Air Force SP unit so they supplied the cars. Ford LTDs with a 5.0 H.O. Then they started getting replaced with the Chrysler Reliant K cars. And we had some OD green VW vans as well

On the ship (378', flight deck, 5"/38, and torpedoes) doing Fishery boardings on the Grand Banks usually just the Officer was armed. Down south in Windward Passage doing buccaneer patrols we were all armed.

On my small boat at Coast Guard Stations I would give the 1911 issued me to my deck hand so he had his hands available to handle lines and fenders.(and hang onto the boat) (If SHTF I would just throttle up and onto any boat until they rolled over)
I took his M16A1 and kept it at my feet while I was driving.
The engineer's 12 gauge was at the bottom of the ladder just outside the engine room.


We still had 1911's in my National Guard Infantry unit till late 90's. We were the first to get Humvees though. The only Motorized Infantry in the country, Not Mechanized. (We became that later after we went Manpads) We had something like 140 Humvees per battalion plus 10 or so deuce and a halfs. We even had a few busses, and off course cutvees hidden in every nook and cranny that we never discussed with anyone. We had mounted Tow missiles, grenade launchers, M-60's and Ma Dueces mounted on the duece and a halfs.

I saw a Glock in the field before I saw a Beretta. (quite a few of the officers were PD and carried their own handguns) I saw Battalion Commanders carry everything from Lt Wt Commanders to 1917's to Colt SAA's.

Man, I tell ya, God's honest. I always thought the USCG was great duty. More than once I wish I had joined that instead of the Army.

For anything but rescue diver.

My father served 26 years in the US Navy, thru Korea and Viet Nam. Combat veteran.. Back when the Marines and Sailors had a rivalry, but still respected each other because good men had given their lives doing what was asked of them. So, I knew the drill.
