Honestly this shtf is something I've heard all my life.


It seems to mostly be about kill or be killed fantasy where man lives in the state of "nature".


But in history, that rarely happens. It either comes so fast your only option is to run or die, or it's really really slow.



Take the Balkan wars where sides changed rapidly. One day the turk civilians are being slaughtered, another the Bulgarian. They didn't even really have time to react or escape.

Or the jews in 1930s Germany. Most of them were in denial, even after the crystal night. It happened fast after that.

Germans going in, ans Russian coming out of the earth front. Murder, rape, pillaging, starvation, slavery....


Most of the really really slow types, people band together and form communities. Like the great depression, etc.


I could go on.


But to think you're gonna get in a truck with 4 of your buddies and rule the waste land...well you'll be dead real quick.

How did you find a MAG. How did you determine they were liked minded and trustworthy?

It seems challenging to find like minded preppers when most people don't want to tip their hand and discuss what they are doing. No one wants to be remembered as the guy who was s prepper that has supplies.

I'm going to approach this as logically as I can without going down any rabbit holes.

Think of prepping like insurance.

You can still go about your daily life the same as any normie but now you have "SHTF insurance".

You have all types of insurance presumably correct? Auto, collision, fire, theft, health insurance etc.

Why do you have all those insurance plans? That if something shitty happens you protect yourself. You're not hoping for a fire but you realize it's a possibility and you want to protect yourself.

Do you save for retirement? If so, why? If you're saving for retirement you want to be prepared to enjoy it and not short yourself. It's wise to plan ahead. You want a good quality of life.


Prepping for SHTF is absolutely no different from anything above. You're hedging your bets against different outcomes. You want to protect yourself no matter what.

If you're investing resources and time into prepping treat it like an investment or insurance.

With the way things are going it's seemingly more likely than ever it's going to be needed

I don't plan on going anyplace. What I need to survive a long term SHTF is in place. Girlfriend will kill me but today I online from wiggy's ordered another sleeping bag. We have 2 units that is supposed to keep one warm to -30 I believe. Girlfriend and I both have one. With all the talk of using nukes in Europe a N winter is possible. ... Global cooling folks... So I ordered their warmest sleeping bag. . .. I just look at things somewhat differently. than most.

my plan is to have a full fuel tank, a full DEF tank, and a fire road that goes a LONG, LONG way into the woods.

I also think you should have plans for different scenarios. After covid and reading about Chinese labs and research a real pandemic is a distinct possibility. Forget about grocery stores remaining open because they are essential. In a real viral epidemic you wouldn't want to venture out so you need to be prepared to bug in, eliminate outside contact and be prepared to defend what's yours.

Many years ago, while selling guns at Gander, I met a guy. Slowly but surely he began to come in more and more. We began talking to each other. Over the course of a few months, we had gotten deep into talks. We both realized that we were on the same sheet of music. A few weeks later, he asked if I wanted to go shooting with him and his family. My family was invited as well. We went shooting and had some good family conversations.

A few more get togethers and I was invited to meet a few of the other members. After many months, I was invited to be part of them. This was in fact, a long process.

The second and smaller group that I belong to began with close friends and were grew a bit from there.

You are correct, takes time and a lot of trust gathering. If nothing ever completely breaks down, no worries, made some good friends out of it.

Even the useless people can stand sentry watch,cook or serve food,fill/stack sandbags,fill water bucket,boil water.iv thought about this too.there will always be something for the unskilled to do.

An extra set of hands can always be trained too.

you'd have to be a borderline vegetable not to be able to be useful in some form.

Whether you're useful enough to justify the resources it takes to keep you alive is another question.

There will always be some group that claims dominion over wherever you live. They will call themselves the government and demand taxes and fealty.

Whether they are tolerable or not is a decision you will have to make in the momemt.

Ratings.... This is something folks don't understand ...4 hours sleep at -40°F. ... I thought it was 2 hrs sleep from a you tube that I saw.
Still the ratings of sleeping bags are so many folks get one good to say 32 F and at actual temp of 32 they freeze. all night. Some folks have said the wiggy bags are more in line with an actual rating... I have read that one needs to keep the bag from the wind. ... Overbag, tarp,tent and the like as a wind on the bag alone is less than ideal .
I am not pushing this companies products. Folks do your research ... Make up ones own mind. As I have said in the above post... I do not have a wood stove. Cannot install one. If the electric fails long term I want something to survive the winter. Getting a good nights rest in a grid down situation is vital .

Not only research, which is important. You gotta use what you have to ensure the research was correct.

I used the bags that I have while in the Military. I did not do temperature checks while using them. I cannot tell you how cold some of the nights were. I do know many were freaking cold. Deathly freaking cold. They worked well enough to keep my warm(er) and allowed me some decent sleep. There are so many great tools, in this case; sleeping bags on the market that are awesome. Some are very costly, not too costlu though when really needed.

As for the research, YouTube is a great tool, but not an end all in your research. I push no companies or specific products either. I just like to share what I have been through and what I have done.

I was considering investing in this when my wife was in the house. She would always turn up the AC and run it the entire night, and I needed something that would help me survive at night that is more practical than 4-5 blankets weighing me down.

(Luckily when she left my electric bill dropped by around 60%).
