During my recent tourism of Revolutionary War sites in Eastern Mass, it quickly became apparent that during that era Local Militias were considered essential.
They were tools in repelling invaders, and maintaining order. Even organized crime feared them.
Yet at some point, a Federal Deep State evolved, that naturally feared a force of armed, organized civilians.
A force composed not of "Gun Nuts", or "Survivalists", but of farmers, storekeepers, clerks, and just plain average folk.
Our lack of such organizations is exactly what emboldens the Deep State to do whatever they please.
One has to wonder if the Founders ever anticipated a time without those local militia.
A re-imagined America would need a mechanism to ensure the continued existence of Local Militia, under Local Control, well-funded, and with a certain degree of Mandatory Participation.
Just like in 1776.
