Gov. Andrew Cuomo spent dramatically more time in Albany in 2018 than he has in past years, although he rarely ventured beyond the confines of the Executive Mansion or his Capitol office. And while the governor was something of a shadowy figure when in the state’s capital, his presence on the upstate airwaves has become more prominent recently, reversing a second-term trend.
A POLITICO review of Cuomo's public schedules showed the governor spent all or part of 137 days in Albany from Jan. 1 through Dec. 28. That’s up from 82 at the same point in 2017 and 68 in 2016.
But he only made seven pre-announced public appearances in the county throughout the year, down from 14 in 2017 and eight two years ago. By contrast, Cuomo made 110 public appearances in the 180 days in which he was based out of New York City.
If any denizens of the capital feel slighted, they should know that the governor didn't make many scheduled appearances anywhere this year, even though he was campaigning for reelection. His 214 pre-announced appearances this year marked a decline from 236 in 2017 and 234 in 2016.
He made 18 public appearances in Nassau, 14 in Suffolk, 13 in Westchester, seven in Monroe, six in Erie and five in Onondaga. No other county outside of New York City or Albany was graced by the governor’s presence on more than five occasions.
