Where is the Remington Museum now?

Last weekend we went for a joy ride west on 20 to Cazenovia and came back east on 5S, passing through Illion. Going past the Remington factory I wondered if all the firearms were still sitting in the museum...loved that place.

Anybody know anything about the present situation with that collection?

AFAIK neither the Museum nor the Country Store are open, and haven't since the Bankruptcy.
There was wayyy more than 13 Million (what Round Hill paid for the Factory) in the museum and gun library holdings/
Essentially they stole it on an inside deal, the former employees NEVER received a cent of the moneys owed for back pay, insurance, vacation, etc.
and on a tangent; "Rem Arms" will NOT even talk to you about anything "Remington" not parts, not service, and certainly not warranty.

Remington Ammunition (and the name) was procured by Vista Outdoors which owns multiple brand names.
Sorry, but I seriously doubt it'll ever open again, and word has it from a former employee that "(exhibit) items have gone missing and nobody seems to know what happened to them."

Reputedly, it is closed permanently. Remington had $950 million debt, and sold for $150 million to bidders in the bankruptcy breakup.

BUT,

The guns have not yet appeared on any high grade auction site.
Is it an albatross to Rem-arms? A Museum makes no money, but has assets. I would assume that public announcement would legally have to be made, to notify the investors about the sale of any assets acquired.

New 700,'s 870's, 1100's, are assembled in Illion today.
Barrels are made in Tennessee.

The custom shop, may or may not be in S Dakota. I can find no info, but custom shop dealers exist.
In 2008 Remington bought Dakota Arms, and that became their custom shop location. It may still be, and today employs 40 employees......but not Christi Noem, yet.

Rem-arms does not make 1911's.....NOW, but owns the rights to the Remington 1911, and could start up again............IN GEORGIA

Huntsville's massive plant and Co HQ, made the 1911's after Illion quit making them, and AR's-- DPMS and Bushmaster were made in Huntsville, along a a number of other businesses acquired by Remington/Vista. I am not sure if Marlin was being made there or not.

Both AR brands were sold and are owned by different makers today. Marlin went to Ruger.

Huntsville is pissed as Remington was given $70 million in incentives, and the plant was just sold for $25 million. $12 million was recovered for Huntsville.

RemArms HQ is now in LaGrange Georgia, not Illion, or Huntsville, or S Carolina, or Tennesse.

Museum may move THERE intact.

Custom shop is a big question mark

Many thanks guys for the info. I have always felt that the folks at Remington got fucked over no matter which way things would go, recently or in the past.

I don't know why, but the firearms industry in the Mohawk Valley has such historical roots...one would think that this would be appreciated more.

Last summer we drove out to what was left of the Savage factory in Utica...sad story there. What a mess.

I had some work done on a 597 in Illion long ago. The shop was called White Dog, I believe the smith's name was Rob? That place is long gone too.

I most likely wouldn't consider buying anything new from Remington . I know a few who bought their shotguns and are unhappy with them. For those who like shopping for used Remington and Remlins check with Utica Firearms. They get a huge turnover of fine old, used firearms.

Yes Rob was the owner of White Dog gun smithing shop in Illion.
I met Rob many years ago at the Syracuse gun show. Back then he had recently opened his shop after being laid off from Remington for quite some time. Rob was the real deal. He was a master gun smith at Remington for many years. I also had him do some work on my original first year 1100 shotgun.

Ah, yes, he used to work at Remington as I remember. Man, that was years ago. Still have the 597...cloverleafs at 50 yards.

I believe that Rob from White Dog has passed. A successor may be operating his shop in Verona, NY.
I had a Win 1400 shotgun barrel rifled by him..maybe even inside the Rem Factory...a Remchester bbl, or a Winington bbl?

Well Remington had a roto-forge barrel forging machine... I could see it being slipped through, or even a finished blank without the extension threads cut being mated to a Winchester pattern.

Sad news. When I was young I worked with a woman whose father was a Remington employee. Everybody used her as a pass-through for getting gun work done at Remington. And later in life I worked with guy who went to school with Rob from White Dog. And even later I came to know another gun smith who also worked at Remington...and his son is a gun smith.

So my point is that the depth of Remington's reach, over time and many generations, has the kind of dimension that historians look for.
