Which Gun Oil???

I've almost used up my 10 year old bottle of Slip 2000. I use it very sparingly, out of needle bottles scattered around the shop and in my range bags.

Now I don't know what to get. As far as I can tell, the Slip 2000 is a light (~10W) synthetic oil. Im torn between getting another bottle, trying something else billed as the next best thing, or just getting a bottle of synthetic motor oil in one of the super light weight viscosities.

Please discuss.

When the local high school announced that they were going to allow students to be on a trap team here, the local sportsman's club that allows the team to use their trap range, had Otis Technologies come out, and Otis gave a crap load of things away that day. I was given a can of their cleaning sprays and 3 of their lube bottles( just 1oz sized) and I will say, it's an alright oil, it does what it does.


A friend of mine is an Amsoil dealer and Ive tried their oil/cleaner as well. It all works but I will say, if you like SLIP, than keep using it. What works for you, works for you(if its not broke don't fix it)

Whatever slides and glides! Doesn't matter, is just like a car, as long as you change your oil often, you'll be good.

I use grease on sliding parts and oil on pivoting/rotating parts. Clean after every shoot... And never had an issue. No safe Queens so maybe if long term storage I would be leaving a little coating on all metal surfaces...

I generally use Hoppe's #9 oil. Or the same oil I put in my Indian MC and zero turn mower if/when I have a little left in the bottom of a qt. bottle... Mobile 1 20/50.

No idea if it's any good but Shooters Lube has cool Tshirts you can buy with their lubricant, cleaners.

I use slip 2000 for surface oiling and manual actions and slip synthetic grease for semi autos.


It's still my favorite after all this time.


If you want something in the middle these like slip 30 weight.

Yep, another vote for Mobile 1.
I haven't bought any gun specific oil in years but thinking the Mobile 1 has got to be much much cheaper and one bottle will last forever.

I’ve always used hoppes #9. I’m happy with it so I keep buying it. I like their spray oil as well. The spray puts a real nice light coating on it

Another vote for Mobil 1. Use it in my Honda Pilot. on all my firearms , knives, high end Airguns too. Never a problem.

Make a hook out of a wrecked coat hanger, attach to stick
Place gun on hook, lower into drum until stick rests on drum
Place padlock on stick to comply with Hochul's "safe storage" laws.

Remember to shake gun a few times when you remove it.

I like a bunch of different kinds of oil. Hoppe’s, Lucas, Break Free, Otis, Tri-Flo, and my homemade concoction built from full synthetic motor oil with a certain amount of synth grease mixed in until it’s thickened up enough to run off a stick without forming drops. I call it SquatchSnot.

never tried it ..

i had some LUCAS gun oil once .. used it once on the gun and then the bottle leaked it all out when it fell over in the truck door pocket ..

I use different things for different applications. Mostly CLP, but will use hoppes or Remington wipes for general exterior cleaning and protection.

If it rotates oil it, if it rubs, grease it. I use Mobil one oil and Mobil 1 grease for all my gun work, from flintlocks to AR's. I bought one can of each ten years ago and my great grand children will still never run out.

I decant them into these little nickel plated brass jars that seal up tight and are easily stored in a kit bag for away games.
