In 1974, for my 14th birthday (at the time the earliest age you could hunt small game in NY with a firearm) I received a H&R Topper 20 ga single-shot shotgun as a bday gift from my parents.

These were my favorite shells, the Federal "Duck and Pheasant" loaded with #6 (lead) shot, no restrictions on lead shot for waterfowl hunting began until 1976. I didn't know it at the time, but these were Federal's 'promotional' loads. Top of the line high-brass was the Hi-Power. All I knew is that they absolutely hammered gray squirrels. Looking at the photos brings back a lot of memories.

Sure do miss the ole diagonal stripe.

Me and the old man would always go thru the Kmart and other ads in the Sunday paper looking for sales on shotgun shells, slugs and .22's. Then make a list.

Edit: Lol, "bulk buying" was a box of bird shot, 2 boxes of rifled slugs, and 2-3 boxes of .22's each

Man that was a Looong time ago. Thanks for the walk down memory lane. I believe I still have at least one box Of 20ga. left in an ammo can.
