Who takes coyotes in CNY?

Hey guys. I am hoping to get into my second season of coyote hunting soon. I went last season in the southern tier, and was able to shoot and kill one coyote. This was on my dad's land, and he kept that coyote for the pelt.

Being home in Onondaga county, I really dont know where to take a coyote if I kill one. I personally don't want the pelt, and I really don't want to just drag a dead coyote over to the brush and leave it either.

I have a good friend that runs a trap supply store on the side.. he's never once wanted a coyote or any other pelt shot with rifle from hunters other than deer hides. we just talked about a few weeks back all over again.. fur prices are in the toilet, and have been for a long time.. they are less valuable with high power rifle holes in them. prices are so bad he almost considered not collecting deer hides from this season.. So if I shoot any yotes ,, they're left for the vultures..

Skin it up and make a pelt if skinning one sounds a little daunting to you use a compressor. Just put a small slit in the hind leg just above the paw insert the air nozzle and let the air do most of the hard work. Just pay attention, I almost over inflated one once. The exploding mush would have been nasty as hell.

Yes for fun or population control....I just figured if someone wants the pelts, I will deliver. I guess leaving them for the vultures to eat is fine too.

I give my dead critters to a local trapper. Hard for me to get out this time of year.

I dont know any trappers personally...I met a guy on state land a few years ago who did a bunch of trapping, but I havent seen him over there in quite some time.

They are very hard to kill,and so there population is out of control.NY DEC likes them around for deer control,they do not care about the well being of the herd/hunters just want all deer wiped out for big logging.DEC said the deer kill was up 10% from last year in the Southern Tier,glad to know 2 foot of snow first day helped out for a great hunting season for everyone except all the people I know and the guy that shot his hunting partner on last day.

I’m planning on hunting some coyotes this year too. 6.8 SPC practice for deer season. I will leave them to rot. Only animal I’ll do that with.

Great trophy for there pelts,if you can actually get one.I never shot one but hear packs of them around the house all the time,but don't hunt them specifically.They are killing all the fawns of the local doe population we have,fawns are easy pickings for a pack of them during the spring time.I have even drove down the road and seen fawn legs laying in the road from there massacre aftermath.Cant believe there is even restrictions on them,should be open year round for these worthless animals!

Hell the state should open more if it’s lands to logging many of the state forests are so old they are almost devoid of life. The best hunting in the adk’s is on or around paper company properties and the forests I hunt in Chenango county are managed for timber and have some of the best big and small game habitat in the state.

Big lumber? Never heard that they want deer wiped out. What's more believable to me is insurance companies wanting them wiped out. Any repair caused by a deer is a loss to them. I've also read that coyotes will have more or less pups depending on the conditions of the enviroment. Meaning if food is plentiful, they will have more and vice versa. Not sure of the source of that though. I am going to look for it.

I'm surprised furor Andy allows any guns for hunting or any other reason what so ever, but that for another time.

If by chance you do get a coyote watch YouTube and see how to shin it out properly. Roll it up, put it in a plastic bag put it in the freezer and post on here for free or a donation to some charity.
I've shinned a bunch of them over the years.

A guy I know our here buys a young goat from the livestock auction. He places it in a wire dog crate for a decoy when he calls cats & coyotes.

I dont know how legal that is, but if no one sees you it doesn't matter like (shoot-shovel & shut up).

Another guy I know uses dead calves that he gets from a large dairy farm for coyote bait. About then years ago he shot a cougar while watching it for coyotes.
They need to be wired down so they dont get dragged off. He uses trail cams to see what and when shit comes around to feast on the calf carcass.

I have hunted over dead calves before.....nothing touched them. Predators put a hurting on the local farm duck and geese.

You can bait yotes, hunt them 24/7 for 6 months (all year if there causing damage), trap them, run them down with dogs and even hunt them with a rifle in shotgun counties once there is no open deer season. Yup sounds like the DEC doesn’t what them killed.

Yes it is a rifle county. In a shotgun county once all deer seasons are closed in that county you can hunt fur with a rifle.
An example would be Dutches and Putnam counties.

This is written on the DEC web pages and I called and verified it back 6 or 7 years ago.

They know hunters cant put a big dent in there population,there nocturnal and elusive chupacabra like creatures that cant be wiped out by conventional means.What the deer hunters dont get/see (besides me) is that they are methodologically wiping out the population slowly by giving no recruitment/regeneration of young by the coyotes eating there fawns.

I:E...Hunters shooting doe and whats left not producing baby's equals a yearly declining herd until you end up exactly what we got here.Glory days over,fighting for scraps and shooting your partner.Glad I never liked deer meat that much!!!

In fact I would say 3M has way to many. The measure of a healthy herd isn’t a big herd. The measure of a healthy herd is the balance of numbers verses capacity. A large winter kill generally means just a bad winter and more deer then the land can adequately feed.

But carry on it’s fun blaming the green shirts for everything.

True but my understanding is the on your property exemption means if I need to (stress on "need" as in life and property), on my property I can use basically any legal firearm I want on a yote, at any point in the year.

Not citing chapter and verse, just my understanding. And again is limited to your own property as I interpret it.

Basically it just uses to many words to say “ we don’t trust you won’t hunt deer in a non- rifle deer county with a rifle and not claim your fur hunting if cought”
