Who's our resident Lever action expert ?

I have a 1895 Remlin (remington/marlin) 45-70, I put a Brownell's Big loop lever on it. LOVE the big loop, but now the action won't stay closed and to load the gun through the side gate I need to hold the lever tight with my left hand while sliding cartridges in with my right.

I love the gun, but this is kinda pissing me off? I compared the big loop lever to the original, and they look identical in every way? I just can't seem to figure out why the lever won't stay closed,

anyone got any ideas ??? Did I put the bolt in wrong? is the new lever to long? ( doesn't seem to be)

The last marlin 336 308mx did that right out of the box. I could load it fine but once you had one in the chamber, there was tension on the action and lever. The action would pop open. So I always held the the lever closed. Sometimes the action would pop open right away or in 5 mins. I did send it in for warranty and the issue was fixed. I don’t recall exactly what they did but I want to say the lever came back fitted. There was machine marks on it. I sold it cause it wouldn’t shoot a good 5 shot group.

maybe your new lever is out of spec

The weight of the larger loop lever could be the reason why not holding in the closed position .

Ok, i didn't think of putting the old one back in. DUH!!! I'll check with youtube and see what I can find there. The gun shoots really well and I like the gun, it's just annoying as hell

Did the large lever come with a new spring and plunger? If not your old spring could be weak or a little rusty and the weight of the larger lever is helping to keep it from staying locked.

yep, I checked Youtube and found the same thing, nothing. And i already know how to take the thing apart. Unfortunately the firearm is in another state and Im going to a wedding in Virginia on Thursday thru Sunday, so it will be a couple weeks before I can get back to where it's located..
Yes, I moved many of my firearms out of state to avoid a possible "Red Flag" issue. Yes, Im paranoid.
There is a gunsmith near where the firearm is, I may just drop it off there after hunting season

Jmac00 in the old lever there is a little nub you have to remove the pin out of and install into the new lever loop.

This is what locks the loop in the upward position and pushes up on a pin so you can depress the trigger.

I made this mistake when I upgraded my 1895G Remlin.

I bought a Wild West Big lever loop and found the location for the locking nub was filled with some kind of dried compound which I used a small screw driver to scrap out.

I'll post pictures for you when I get home.

The first picture is of my factory lever handle. You can see the hole from where I removed the nub and the smaller hole was the pin. Be careful when removing the pin and nub, underneath the nub there is a spring.

The second picture is the nub, spring, and pin installed on my Wild West big loop lever.

Make sure you install it in the same position/direction/facing.

sorry, I have been working so much lately I just got back into this thread. when you take the nub out, will that thing go flying across the room if you don't hold it down?

WB .. i can't say .. but i can say on the Moss 500 safety slide , spring and ball installation .. yes the ball will launch .. LOL .. i'm surprised after 3 launches i kept finding it in the 16x16 shop .. finally got that sucker back together LOL ..
