Why does government seem to control so much of our lives now?

I work with varied generations all day every day. The younger generations dont want to better themselves. If you can get them to show up for work they balk at the idea of actually completing the job or doing anything above and beyond. If you offer them a leadership position they dont want it, its easier to be told what to do. I walk though the lunchroom at work and people dont talk to each other anymore, they are self absorbed trying to impress a fantasy world on FB, IG or Ticktock.

I don't think that's the case. I spent an hour running this morning, and 45 minutes after that working on a Go-lang class, and then I have weight lifting in the afternoon and an another 30-45 minutes of coding after work ends. That doesn't count work. And I'm not alone either in that I know other people that behave similarly.

You may just work with people that don't give a shit. That's not a generational thing. It might just be it's easier to fall into that with the distractions of the internet.

A seldom observed truth is this is largely a rural/urban divide. I think those of us who grew up on farms, or who had parents that did, were instilled with a degree of independence, work ethic, problem solving skills, and sense of responsibility well in excess of our urban counterparts. The “city kids” always thought they were smarter and better than us “hicks”, and were always looking for the angle, even though a lot of them didn’t have a practical skill to lean on. The problem simply grew with boomer suburbia, as their attitudes were essentially urban with a little more greenspace. TV and Xbox are no substitute for learning how to fix a baler, run a tractor, and weld up busted stuff.

I agree. I was telling a friend a few days back that this isn't so much a left vs right thing as it is a urban vs rural thing. I grew up on a farm and live in farm country to this day. I think that your post is spot on.

I also grew up on a farm.

The idea that you would call a professional to fix a tractor, or appliance, or plumbing, or basically anything would never have even occurred to my grandfather.

If it needed doing, you figured it out and did it.

Thankfully I inherited a lot of that attitude.

But, I'm a bit lazier, so I'll call professionals if it's a PITA.

TL;DR - Growing up on a farm and everything I learned on the farm paved the way for a successful and happy life. To this day I can't sit still for long. Always got to be productive.
It's just a way of life for me.




I have earned my living working in automotive repair shops most of my adult life. It has provided the wife and I a good life. That all started by helping my father out repairing/maintaining our stuff in the farm shop. That's where the seed was planted... No pun intended. LOL

We did pretty much everything ourselves. Small family farm and money was tight at times.
I am pretty much a 100% DYIer. Actually it never crosses my mind to hire someone else for anything. I do everything on my house from the foundation to the peak. Electrical, plumbing, everything. I repair all of my own stuff from A to Z. I cut down my own trees, hunt for some of my food. butcher my own deer, grow some more food in the garden, bla bla bla you get the point.

I learned everything working alongside my father and uncles and grandpa keeping everything in working order. We had a farm vet but other than that we did pretty much everything ourselves. Learned a lot growing up on a farm and it has served me well my whole life. One of the most important things I learned growing up on a farm is a strong work ethic. That can not be overlooked.

My childhood into a young adult was not quite normal. I grew up hard, I had chores to do before school and also after school. Sometimes a lot, sometimes not as much, depending on the time of the year. I'm not complaining. I consider myself fortunate, I have lived a good life up to this point. And that is directly tied to everything I learned growing up on the farm.
