I may be an idiot because this is the first time I have heard of this technology, The National Integrated Ballistic Information Network.
Apparently if used correctly it is a great tool that is aimed at the criminals, not the law abiding.
The few cities that use it say things like "fantastic", "invaluable" and "outstanding technology".
However, because of the manpower needed, 1 person, most cities will not use it and if they do, they use it improperly by not adding information properly.
The LEOS that do use it say it solves gun crimes and is a great deterrent.
For those that dont know, this is how it works.
Every bullet casing found at a crime scene is analyzed and photographed. Also, all guns found or taken from bad guys are added to the system.
Now, they can connect guns and shells with crimes.
Its a deterrent because criminals dont want a gun with "bodies" on them or guns used in multiple crimes. So they dont want to buy a gun off the street that may have many murders connected if they get caught with it.
As far as the cost. Many LEOs are saying that with all the money being spent now on fighting gun crimes, nothing is working. At least the NIBIN system has an effect on gun crime without penalizing law abiding gun owners.
