Found a bunch of these cases in my range’s bucket today. What could they be? It’s a .30-06 case cut down. See the comparison to a full .30-06.

Any ideas? Got me curious. There was a lot of them. It struck me as strange that someone would go through so much trouble then leave them all there instead of reusing tnem.

I didn’t have anything to measure. Should’ve taken one home I guess.

If the case length is 58mm/2.27" or close, I'd say it was converted to 7.7 Japanese

Could just be the angle of the picture though.

The shoulder angle and neck length look similar. The ring near the base is common on one time fired brass in a Type 99. The chambers are usually on the "generous" side.

No it was definitely noticeably shorter than the .30-06.

06 brass is often used to make 7.7. 8mm sometimes also but the case is a little short. Anyone at your range into Japanese military rifles?

smaller how exactly? smaller size, smaller diameter, both? ... if it is not a 30 caliber it is not a 7.7 jap.
It looks like a 30 degree shoulder so then it would not be any military cartrige.... w/o some measures it is all a wild guess.
