Will there be a lot of FFL Closings early 2024?

Hi all,

I am curious as to the fate of FFLs in this wonderful state, especially as 2024 is fast approaching. The FFL I've been to a bunch has expressed to me that he plans to close up shop around 1/31/24, due in large part to the new requirements of Article 39. And who can blame him? He is out in the sticks, and runs his FFL on his property close to his house. ATF inspections are one thing, but giving the State Police full access to 24/7 audio and video surveillance tapes of his home is another.

I'm wondering if you all have heard of similar situations? How are FFLs dealing with this? I assume margins on these businesses are already pretty tight, these compliance costs are going to be huge!

The FFL that I use here in lower Westchester is not doing ammo or gun transfers any more. He has a retail store but does not sell guns or ammo in his store. I had my Tikka T3 transferred through him just before this BS law went into effect. A few weeks after the law passed, I went with my friends Dad to pick up some ammo he had shipped there. He got delayed 3 days and when we went back to pick the ammo up, the store owner said this new system takes too much time away from his other business and he can't dedicate the time to deal with it anymore. So yes, we lost one FFL already.

I was wondering about the 24/7 video surveillance thing. My FFL friend mentioned they want a live feed when doing background checks. I take it that is true? I know they want 24/7 video feeds saved for like 2 years...which is petabytes of data.

I personally know two that have ceased operations in the State already and a third that will ONLY transfer to other FFL's; he will not process a 4473, no walk in's, in transfers, no ammo, not nothing to anyone in NY unless it's being shipped to their Dealer...I fully expect there are more that either haven't announced or I just haven't heard.

Many folks like make to have "conversations" in places like Gun Shops, those are privileged and private, yet assuredly there are those that would disapprove or even open investigations because of them...their Fifth Amendment Rights are being violated by mandated surveillance, and likely there are infringements on or leading to with their Fourth and Sixth, and just because it's third Party monitoring doesn't make it any less a violation as they could, might even be compelled to report those overheard conversations to the authorities and or Public...
It's ALL about building a data base identifying YOU, what you have, what you think, what you might do if pushed too far...go on, tell me I'm wrong.

Yes many have closed and many more will close. It’s been talked about on here extensively already. I suspect there will k ly be one or two per area when this is done.

And right there is the problem. The people that can do something about it legally are the very ones violating the constitution on a regular basis.

If so, this is sad. That was where I bought my very first gun years and years ago.

I know of one small shop that is not renewing his FFL when it expirers at the end of the year.

So... Let me ask this. You're doing business as, or have a secondary residence in another state. Purchase a firearm there and legally own it. You want to list it on your license here in NY, you're technically legal in both domains...

To add the Firearm to your license you just need to do that, no? No coupon or FFL required because you already own it (elsewhere)?

Educate me on this one as I'm unsure how that works. Asking for a friend, lmao!

Ammo background checks to begin mid-September?

Mass, as @dean3690 said, and CT has a FOID card requirement for ammo purchase as well. One can also buy ammo in CT with a CT non-res pistol permit

A cousin of mine gave up his FFL a couple of months ago . This is the sad reality of living in NYPS (New York police state) . All part of the big plan to remove our constitutional rights by unconstitutional means .
