Winchester 17 gr. V-MAX 17 HMR case head separation.

I had an eventful morning. I went out to pattern my Maverick 88 12 gauge for turkeys next week. That was done pretty quickly somI settled in for some 125 yard plinking with the Savage 93R 17. I was three round shy of finishing my second box of Winchester v-max when a cartridge suffered case-head separation. I took the gun apart to inspect it for damage and I discovered a hairline fracture in the fore-end.

so, I’m in the market for a new stock.

Me too. It is a reminder to always wear eye pro. Plus, I apparently had hand sanitizer on hand.

The mag is also totaled. My hand was on the bottom of the fore-end just ahead of a mag well.

Call Winchester and report it ! Make sure you have the lot # on the ammo box. Don't shoot any more of that lot # .

Reporting it may save someone else's life.

I reported a lot # of small pistol primers many years ago and Winchester sent me a voucher for 2 bricks of primers and a shipping label to send them all the primers I had of that lot #. They were really good about it.

check your barrel for clear also .. don't need no squib in there ..

The firearm is completely functional. I just can't torque the stock properly. I reported it to Winchester. I don't know how old this ammo is. It looks pretty old. The lot number is G26003. Maybe someone searching for it will find it here.

I have three boxes from the same lot. I'm hoping the local constabulary can dispose of it for me.

I got my new stock and everything seems to be fine. However, I did get a handful of FTE from 100 rounds of brand-new Hornady V-MAX.

I may end up sending it back to Savage for a check-up.

Until then, It's not easy being green.

Glad you weren’t hurt. Watch that Hornady stuff too. I had a similar incident with Hornady V-Max about a year ago. Luckily My CZ rifle didn’t sustain any damage. I did however have a Hell of a time removing a squib from the barrel. I called Hornady about the issue as I was having other failure issues with the ammo and it turned out that there ended up being a recall on some lot numbers.

I stopped using both Winchester and Hornady due to reading about other reported issues. I only use cci now and Federal when I can find it.

The support staff at Winchester is operating from home for *cough* reasons. I went back and forth via email. They had me shipped the leftover ammo. My guess is they’ll do an investigation at some point. It may not be resolved for some time.

Win .17 recall

It not the same model ammo and this ammo is much older. For what I’ve read on the internet (true?), there have been problems with squibbing from older lots of 17 hmr ammo of all brands. That doesn’t mean much because only a few factories made 17hmr in the early days. I suspect I had a squib in the barrel from the previous round. It hard to tell with your ear muffs on.

There have been several reports of ammo failures like this on the rimfirecentral forum. I would go over there and read up on it.
My CZ has not had an issue yet but I haven't shot it that much....Yet!
