What are your thoughts on the best years (accuracy, fit & finish ect.) for the Winchester Model 70?

I have one from the 80's it is a flawless action. Never a problem. Thousands of rounds down the barrel. It has taken down a lot of deer close to 100. Has been loaned out to family and friends during hunting trips and has never given me a problem. Still looks good as new, except for one dent 2nd range trip had it on open case on car hood wind blew it off and dented the stock. Mine is a .308 Feather weight. Don't get the feather weight one it kicks worse the a .300 Win Mag. Short barrel light weight bolt gun only complaint I have for the gun. Not a flaw just a by product of design. With Federal Premium rounds in it it will hit 1.5 inch groups at 200 yards all day. Good enough for deer hunting in this part of the country.

I always thought that the Featherweight was a great looking rifle.
That is exactly why I picked it it is very pretty gun. I bought it when I was 17 paid $415 for it.

With that input, I think I'd get it chambered for .243 Win
Got a pre-64 featherweight in 3006 and it just is classic workmanship.

I take that back, didn't know it was offered chambered for 7mm-08 Rem. My first choice.

My girlfriend has a model 70 in 30-06 from the early 80's I believe. It's the carbine version. Very nice gun. Haven't fired it yet, so I can't speak for accuracy, but I did just put a new Nikon Pro Staff on it.

If you had to walk all day with it you'd be liking the FWT more and more with every step... I would definitely get it in a caliber that you could buy ammunition for in any Mom & Pop country store (.308). In .308 you have a very versatile rifle. Kick a little, I suppose. If the recoil bothers you stick with the 150 grainers and not the 180's. You shooting it all day or a shot or 2 at a critter???

I wouldn't get all caught up in the pre 64 thing,, I have the new model 70 featherweight made in Portugal by Browning. Fantastic high gloss blue, great European walnut.. I'd buy another new Winchester in a flash ! when I'm not deer hunting it sits right next to my model 7 Remington and it's easy to see the craftsmanship in the Winchester over the new Remingtons..

How is the action on your Win Model 70?
I ask as we have a Pre-64 ( 1960) Model 70 in 300 H&H Magnum and the bolt seems to drag and have more slop/ wiggle in it than the Rem 700 series we're comparing it to.
The Rem cycles super smooth.
With an empty magazine, we can see the bolt being pushed upwards by the magazine follower. With rounds in the mag, its not much better.
The bolt locks up tight , just drags a bit when cycling. Reminds me of the Mossberg MVP that I had.
Cycles OK with the floor plate open .
We're trying to determine if this is "normal" for these rifles or if we have wear.
The gun itself looks very good, Rifling is sharp with no pitting, wood and bluing are good. He's had the gun about a year and has fired it.
We were going to have a 'smith look at it but are having a hard time finding a reliable one in the Syracuse area.
