Even though I have a heavy duty diesel truck with 4x4 and new snow tires, you never know.

I carry a snow shovel, flares, triangles, 2x fire extinguishers, first aid kit, pillow, blanket, couple bottles of water, MRBs, lots of hand tools (mostly for work), traction sand/kitty litter, and one extra set of decently warm water resistant clothes (nylon tracksuit). I keep most of it in the toolbox.

I have used my snow shovel countless times to dig people out.

Last year I earned a big $100 tip from someone for digging their car out.

If all others on the road do t have what you have you still might not be going anywhere. If the road in front of you is a parking lot you’re stuck.

I use Waze and Google Maps to monitor when it's terrible out.

If in doubt, I take the back roads.

I've found that it's actually safer to take back roads than it is to take fast highways when it's totally garbage out. Usually less traffic if you know which back roads to take.

Trust me, I've been there done that before.

I remember as a teen back in the mid-80's I'd drive from Oneida up to Morrisville College to visit my "kinda' girlfriend kinda' friend with benefits" with five inches of new snow, no plows out yet, in a RWD Chevy Citation. Never went into a ditch, only had to stop once or twice in some drifts to plot a better way around.

Today, Whorechul declares Snow Emergencies based on nothing but a Forecast. Averaged out, people have become helpless victims. Not many around any longer that just look at snow as something to respect but still go about their business.

Just a couple weeks ago my wife and I were out and about and had car trouble, I got it fixed but I didn't know that I broke the wires off the temp. sending unit, That thru the ECM in 'cold engine mode' so we had no heat all the way home, 5 HOURS! I dug out my spare gloves and hats and stayed kinda warm. Lesson learned, make sure to put the get home bag back in the truck!

It amazes me how many people have nothing in their vehicle for survival.

Granted, I have a truck and there is a lot of room, but if I shared with all here what I lug in my truck all of the time, you may think I am full of shit.

Chevy Citations were all front wheel drive. Did you mean a Chevette?
