Wolcott gun range, no friend to the 2nd

So during this entire covid thing wolcott gun range has had their range closed to the general public but the store has remained open. Multiple time I have been in their purchasing items and have seen law enforcement using the range. This past weekend a buddy of mine was there friday, saturday and Sunday taking nys armed guard training. I contacted them to see if their range was back open to the general public and they said it was not due to covid and NYS. So I asked why it was open to training classes and law enforcement but not the general public and they responded “that’s the way it is”. I checked with Erie county and NYS and neither of them have any such restrictions on gun ranges being closed right now, (weird how covid presents no such risk to training classes or law enforcement but is too much of risk for the general public(. On top of that I have been in and wanted to purchase regular FMJ ammo on their shelves and they said that ammo was reserved for law enforcement purchase only. Now they are private business and can do as they please, but since they don’t want the general public’s business I will no longer be doing business with them and instead take my business elsewhere. Let them survive just off servicing law enforcement and doing training classes.

If they want to only service training classes and law enforcement then so be it. Don’t lie to me and the generic covid response as a cover for their intentions. The firing pin has had their store and range open almost this entire time. Comparing these two businesses the firing pin appears to be doing quite well financially while wolcott appears not so much. 90% of the time from what I have seen wolcotts range has sat unused. I would have to wonder about the profitability of a business asset that generates no revenue 90% of the time. On average I purchase and sell 10-20 firearms a year and purchase 10’s of thousands of rounds of ammo a year. If they don’t want my business then so be it. Be straightforward about ones intention. Don’t lie to me and say the range is closed and nobody has been able to use it due to covid. Be honest and say it is open only for training and law enforcement.

Strangely, ranges are the best ventilated spaces to be in if an airborne contaminant was an issue. Air comes in behind you and is exhausted outside down range. Ranges are pretty much 100% outside air too.

Low margin shooters pay better than no shooters. Just goes to show that they don’t care about the range and would rather not have it open to the public. If that’s the case then say so. Make it private. But that might hurt their gun sales so they bullshit their customers.

Coming from the auto service industry I was always taught that a lift with no car on it is a lift that is making no money and thus costing the company money. There’s no profit in oil changes or doing nysi but those jobs provide opportunities to find extra work and make money. At the very least you cover your over head. I know for me and my buddies when we would go to the range we would buy their targets and ammo at the very least. Just ask colt how well it has worked out ignoring the civilian market to focus only on law enforcement/military. I don’t understand why one would want to have a retail gun store and range, then basically bullshit the public gun community. Word gets around, especially here in wny where everybody knows everybody. Be honest and say that your range is only open for training classes and law enforcement use. I may not agree with it but at least I could respect you.

Maybe, maybe not. How much does an employee RO cost to supervise the range, as well as other operational costs, etc?

There’s no official dedicated range officer. There’s just a guy at the rental desk watching a screen. I believe it was $13 or $18 an hour per person per lane, plus whatever cost for the gun rental and their ammo if using one of their guns.

I've been there more than a few times and always felt its hit or miss with the staff. Some were pleasant others seemed grumpy, but never rude or condescending like the now defunct Buffalo Gun Center. I guess its there range their rules. If they choose to cater to the police departments that's there business.
Plenty of local gun clubs around that have ranges, maybe try one and see hw it goes

Indoor or outdoor. The few that I talked too either aren’t accepting new members and have a 3 year waiting list or are just shotgun and 22LR only. Or you have to be referred by a current member only.

But OP, What's repulsive to you? That they cater to LE? Ok, so... It's their choice! You make yours! That means whether or not to support their business model by providing any of your hard earned $ to them.

I do support the range having free will, not a question.

But, the low margin shooter idea is reap with problems because the 8 million or so Federal background checks (last month) encompass a shit load of new shooters. So at the very least this business model is not sustainable, at least if growth and marginal profits are considered a good thing! Lolz, but to each their own!
