Woman dead after apparent hunting accident

This is incredibly sad and tragic. This woman was just out walking her dogs. AFTER SUNSET. Please, please, please use what you have been taught in your hunter safety courses. If you can’t see it, don’t shoot it. If it’s after sunset, even remotely close to sunset, don’t shoot it. This woman lost her life because an idiot violated just about every rule there is. It’s accidents like this that are the reason we are constantly defending ourselves to nonhunters.

Just a few miles from my house.
Every single day I hear gunshots WAY before sun up and WAY after sundown, it really makes me mad.
Assholes with buck fever!!
How many of us have passed up a deer because of time of day? Ill bet every hunter on this site.
If in doubt, dont shoot!!
Charges should be filed.

from what I heard, the women was 200 yards away and the shooter was using a pistol. Thats all I heard so far. My thought is he was shooting at a deer (when he shouldn't have) maybe he missed and hit her. Whether charges are filed or not, he's going to get sued for Wrongful death.

The good news, and what might keep him out of jail is he did try to render medical aid til EMT's arrived.

Just remember, this type of thing could happen to anyone of us. DURING NORMAL HUNTING HOURS.

Years ago a friend had a small dairy farm in Kirkwood. One of the neighbor kids was taking a short cut threw his hay field to a friend's house. The field had low spots in it.A guy was driving down the road and seen just the top of his head and thought he was a wood chuck. Needless to say, the kid was shot in the top of his head and killed.
Some think like this happens every year some where in this country.

In a black coat and had jet black hair. Black bear season just opened. One of the neighbors kids just got his hunting license. He was sitting out by himself. He seen the neighbors wife and thought see was a bear and shot and killed her.

I didnt read that in the story.I got a problem with that account.If he was shooting a pistol,unless it was one of those rifle caliber TC Contenders or such,assuming he was shooting at a deer it would have had to be within 100yds or so,no?If thats the case and she was 200 yds away the bullet would have hit the ground before reaching her.I have aRuger .44 mag with a scope,zeroed at 100yds and I wouldnt try to hit a deer out past 50yds or so.The fact that he shot whatever gun he was using past sunset,makes it criminal.That is kinda the idea of that rule,so you dont hit something you cant see.

Ummmm no, it is impossible to shoot someone after sunset during deer season, during normal hours, impossible.
Accidents do happen, but shooting after sunset is 100% negligence.
I passed up a deer the other day. It was about 60 yards away and I could not tell if it was a buck or doe. I could not see it clearly. It was 7:02 in the morning, sun up was 7:18.
In the woods those few minutes matter.

While I'm new in the woods, I still freshly remember the words of the gentleman that taught my hunters safety course.
"Once you pull that trigger, you can't take it back."
They stressed over and over again proper and DEFINITIVE target identification and right behind that background clearance.
While this was most likely unintentional, and tragic, ultimately he was responsible by multiple poor judgements.

This guy fucked up plain and simple. He fired after shooting time, either did not identify his target clearly or did not pay attention to what was beyond his target. Even if you hit vitals on a deer there is a high probability it will pass through and could possibly hit something behind.

I will say just because people hear shots after dark doesn't always mean poaching. There are predator hunters legally targeting critters at dark and also sometimes trappers check at odd hours and must dispatch animals. Don't assume every shot after dark is someone poaching.

A pistol? 200 yards? What an idiot. He's lucky he even hit anything at 200 yards with a pistol.

This is just poor decision after poor decision. Charge him. He's the one responsible for his own damn actions. Every time you pick up a firearm, you're fully responsible for where that muzzle is pointed.

But when I hear 4-5-6 shots from different directions 10 minutes before day break only during deer season, odds are very good these are mostly deer hunters.

i seen single shot pistol in one news report .. TC in 270win or similar rifle round comes to mind ..

Murder .. after hunting time .. not identifying his target .. broke all the rules ..

These are my thoughts on this matter.
- when you are hunting, you have to positively id your target ( I learned that in basic gun safety class)
- 200yrds with a pistol -- REALLY ?!?
- At sunset or just after. How can you see what's out there ?

- Maybe there was a deer within sight range and he missed, no way to know.

I have some property in VA (southern, very rural). During hunting season, sometimes I can see and hear hunters and their dogs in the area from my house.
Whenever I go out into my back yard I try to wear those bright orange hats / caps. - you never know.

This is exactly why I no longer hunt. I was almost shoot in the back, deer was in front of me by 15 yards. Shooter (my friend)was behind me by 15 yards and never saw me. I quit that day

This is probably why black rock closes the range, or at least one of the reasons, during hunting season. To avoid confusion of random people being out there. That, and probably noise I'd assume, during the season.
