Would a new NY Republican Governor be able change NY Gun Laws for the better.

Been debating with my brother recently about NY Gun Laws in general. He is a Democrat, and quite liberal. But is a gun owner himself. He recently bought an AR during lock down... be it a neutered fixed mag version, thats completely impractical for defense, took a gun smith 10 minutes to un-jam a round that failed to chamber. But thats another story...

Any way, do we gun owners and enthusiasts have any hopes of a Republican Governor relaxing gun laws in NY. Or is it a lost cause for us in the great SAFE state of NY...

I said no, because if a Republican did get elected they would be in jeopardy of not being reelected should they pursue gun reform... As NY has way more Democrats than it does Republicans.

I also don't understand how we consistently put anti gun people in office, when the amount of legal gun owners exceeds the # of people who voted for Governor last cycle???

Are most of us just on the fringe, do gun owners in NY really think the hoops and barrels we got to jump through to own firearms is ok, and buying a gun at an lgs could potentially be a felony lol, because the laws are so convoluted that many don't exactly know what they are. Too much left to interpretation or should you be unlucky enough to be stopped by a cop who knows even less about gun laws than the average person and arrests you for illegal gun possession. Which will be on your record even if it is later decided the gun was legal...

Sorry for the rant, just getting back into this after a hiatus. And everyone here always seems to be on the same page as myself... or has way better insight or input than my leftist circle...

I could be wrong, but I thought Governors outline there legislative agenda, and propose these to the legislators via state proposals (executive). In a sense trying to create laws that fit their agenda. Similar to a President offering bills to the house and senate. Of course it would need to pass the state legislative branch, but they do have the power to present and influence what laws are proposed to the state house.

Even if Prince Cuomo was out it would take a huge lift for a new Governor to get the Safe Act off the books.

He or she just couldn’t wave a magic wand and say the law isn’t there. It would take both sides of the legislation halls and even if we have a pro gun Gov. I doubt we will ever see a pro gun legislature for a long time. Once a law is on the books it takes near an act of god to get it off the books.

Face it. The population center is the city. They vote the government and have for years. Unless the city empties out that will be how it works.

If liberals are buying guns now because the country is going to shit then maybe when they are told to turn them in they might start understanding why we have the 2A.

They can but that doesn't mean the legislature has to follow his orders. Also its just a proposal not creation or change. We citizens can also proposal laws and changes to laws.

If you cut NY into two states, with everything south of Rockland and Westchester, inclusive, becoming NY State and everything north becoming the State of Albania, then Albania's legislature MIGHT get rid of the NYuSA.

Edit: too many gun owners make the mistake of assuming gun owner is the same as gun enthusiasts. Plenty of people own guns just for self-defense and don't even train with them. A lot of people used to use them to hunt, but don't anymore. Maybe someone has a .22 they bought to go to the range and plink.

Those same people are the ones who CNN will trot out to say, "I'm a gun owner and I know no one needs an AR-74 machinegun to hunt or protect themselves." Plenty of them are shitty and arrogant people, who will say "well, I know I could be trusted with a gun because I'm so smart and responsible, but not just anyone should be able to have a gun." And still others may not be down with gun control, but just don't care about it as much as some other issue that the Democrats better represent them on.

State laws, yes he can order police to ignore the laws of the state. Whether the police listen is a different story. AG can also be told to not press charges against people for those laws. Again AGs discretion.

We will never see a repeal of any gun law in NYS in our lifetime, nor our children's lifetime.

An extreme longshot might be to undercut the effects of existing laws by closing loopholes or making them stronger, or some other BS packaging of meaningless weasel words. For example, we might be able to "strengthen" our background check system by allowing those with pistol licenses to sell privately without a background check since they've already been cleared. This would free up much needed resources to allow LEO to focus on unlicensed individuals who are part of the iron pipeline and flooding our streets with illegal guns.

Its a war of attrition, one we've been complacent in for over 100 years. They didn't get to where they are in one fell swoop and we won't win back lost ground that way either.

But a gradual chipping away of the BS laws, each one setting up the stage for the next point, would increase the odds from "surely you jest" to "slim to none."

A GOP Governor alone? Not a chance. As others have stated you'd need a pro-gun State Assembly and State Senate to fully repeal the SAFE Act. The only thing a Governor could potentially do is issue an executive order to not follow-through on certain aspects of the law. The memorandum of agreement for no background checks on ammo purchases (yet) is sort of an example of this (though it came through the legislature).

Best we can hope for is the courts to work in our favor. With the current make-up of SCOTUS there's reason to be optimistic but I wouldn't hold my breathe. Roberts is far from a reliable conservative and sides with the Libs often and just today I read that Kavanaugh is expected to uphold Obamacare. Now that is a different issue than guns but still it makes you wonder.

With the way politics and our culture are trending, especially in this state, I don't see that happening for a long while if ever. In fact just about ANY liberal or Democrat inspired law that is one the books never seems to go away.

As far as guns go I think we can count on Alito, Thomas, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and probably Barrett and that'll be enough.
