It is not illegal due to the magazine being fixed. However, NY gun shops aren’t the smartest when it comes to gun laws. When I bought mine, my shop wouldn’t transfer it when I asked them about it. I then asked another shop in the next county and did it with them.
even if it is legal, is transfer depends on only the FFL gun shop dealer's opinion?

An SKS with the bayonet is fine in NY (today) in its original fixed magazine configuration. It’s always a good idea to check with an FFL if they will transfer something that you buy online before you make the purchase. Some dealers will charge excessive amounts if they sell the same item in their shop. Some have no problem at all.

That’s what I did. I stopped by an asked if I could transfer an SKS. When they told me no, I tried arguing to no avail. So I found another shop nearby.
Thanks to you, I gain confidence in buying sks online. I will ask the dealer before buying it.

If you're not in a hurry apply for a C&R license with the BATF it's $30 a little time but if you get one then you can get them shipped to your house other than pistols thoses still need to shipped to regular FFL only because of

They're hugely over priced currently, made for midgets, not beginner friendly for operation, safety, cleaning, tear down, or learning basic shooting skills.
For the dollar range mentioned buy a Savage 11 /111 scoped out of the box in a .223 then come back and thank me in the introduction thread..

I own an sks and I like it a lot . Just asking it’s his first rifle maybe he thinks an AR is to to much rifle or unobtainable in NY. It’s easy to shoot , easy to learn on and shit man its on the forum logo we got to bring it up.

Thank you for worry about my first rifle. In my position, kind of surplus guns are best for me. most of all, I like sks. lol
I'm living in Syosset in Nassau County. I can find many local gun shops nearby.
I think ar15 is also good, but gun regulations cut down their ability seriously.
most of all, they are over $1000....even they are have no stock or have uncomfortable grip

The thordsen stock isn’t bad ive shot a few ar15s with them and it’s not uncomfortable or Change it’s function , which is why NY laws are pointless .if you ever change your mind I’m sure we can show you how to get an AR for closer to the sks price. Don’t get me wrong I love my sks its a great rifle and it’s fun to shoot, just letting you know other options including what others have stated .

I got rid of 2 AR’s because I couldn’t stand looking at them with that Thordsen. It was okay but I never liked them. It was a constant reminder of these laws. I wouldn’t get that feeling with an SKS , Mini 14, Ruger PCC or similar.

The SKS is a fixed magazine gun the SAFE act features don’t apply. The bayonet and lug along with grenade launcher are fine.
I am not buying AR yet, but I can feel your disappointment with those things......

(For the OP) this is (largely) psychological, not functional.
The only problem with the SKS is the length of pull for people with longer arms is too short. The Chinese variant is great from kids and shorter people but if you are above 70” tall it may need spacers under the butt plate to make it comfortable to shoot.
