President Trump plans to take the huge federal Civil Service off cruise control, ending automatic pay increases that go to 99.7 percent of the workforce, trimming fat benefit packages, and for the “worst,” rolling out his trademark phrase from The Apprentice, “You’re fired!”

In his budget, set for release Monday, his administration is planning the biggest reform to the federal workforce in decades, using models from Amazon, Google, and a handful of well-operating agencies.

Gone would be the automatic reward of pay “step” increases of 3 percent to 5 percent which 99.7 percent of workers get, regardless of their performance. Also targeted, said the officials, are annual reviews that now give “everybody” a grade of four or five on a scale of five. And benefits, now 47 percent higher than in the private workforce, according to a congressional report, will be trimmed.

I wish him luck.. considering he'll be going up against two huge labor unions it'll be tough. (I'm a state Union employee, but I don't have much of a choice if I want vision and dental insurance, and I think I'd have to pay anyway)

I think almost all of us on this board agree that the majority of the Federal Government is severely bloated and could use copious amounts of 'drainage'. Maybe with all these companies coming back to the US they can look to hire some undertrained, underworked cleaners to maintain their US factories. MAGA!

All Government officials and employees should have be forced to use the Obama exchange. They should only be allowed to make minimum wage since its good enough for the people to live off of. No more federal holidays.

Recent very short government shut-down - many artices reported "NON-ESSENTIAL" personnel were told not to report for work. If they are 'non-essential' - why are they working there at all?

I do not personally blame local/state/federal workers for their wages and benefits verses the private sector, but it creates a fake economy, e.g., the private sector company has to balance its books or go bankrupt whereas the government just rapes you harder on your taxes.

In the case of NYS, the democrats have essentially a political machine with public sector labor unions, meanwhile our property taxes are going to the moon (due in part to medicaid and state worker compensation) yet private sector paychecks are not keeping up.

I work for the state and I can tell you the pay is not great at all. You get the benifits you get because the pay is low and they want to ensure there is no bribery. I took a pay cut from $63,000 at private sector job to a state wage of $45,000. I was also awarded a one year bump because of my 15 years experience. I would have started at $42,500. Now a year from now I get a $10,000 bump which is nice. Sure the days off and federal holidays are nice, but the pay sucks.

My dental insurance sucks. I just got a $1,250 dental bill and I get a whopping $295 back.

Also the pensions are not what they used to be. When I retire in 26 years I’ll get about $40,000 per year if I can manage to get my salary to $100,000 through cost of living raises or promotions. Sure it’s better than 90% of peoples pensions or lack thereof, but I still need to set aside money in a 401K and oh wait there is no matching. My last job I got 7% matching. Also my health insurance is great and reasonably priced. I pay $400 a month which is 35% of the premium. Also I’ll get a 2% raise for this year. That’s not much. Cost of living raises are chewed up by health insurance increases mostly. I get a $900 raise and $400 of that goes to a health insurance increase. A $500 raise does not cover the cost increase of food. I guess the Feds get a lot more.
