The problem if you want to retire early--let's say you have $3M but you're 40 years old--is that you can't get medicare, and private insurance is very expensive. Well, good thing the gov has an answer: ACA is based not on net worth but on income. As such, if you have a significant portion of your assets fashioned in such a way to avoid income (e.g. savings accounts), and just before you retired you paid off your house and bought yourself a new car, you can live very well on a declared--legal--income that's very, very low. Although you're absolutely wealthy you can now get ACA premiums similar to a family living near the poverty line.

You young guys read Blimey above, personally we have been debt free (not counting monthly bills) about 12 yrs., 2016, 2018, cars paid new cash, house, camp, paid off, new footwear still in boxes, etc.. income footprint looks low. Make a plan stick to it.

This is my exact plan. Money goes into multiple buckets each month, retirement, taxable brokerage and savings. Pull from accounts where needed and allowed to have as little official income as possible. I am sure they will close this loophole real soon though. Then I will add mattress to the collection of buckets that I deposit into.
