That's the exact reason why I left the military.
That is not the point. But to answer the question, I might.
Everything I do in life is because I love what I do. When I joined the Army back in 90, I joined to serve and go to war. I did not join for the paycheck. The job I have now, I would have taken it regardless of pay. Life rewards and happiness are what guides me.
Plus, I am loaded and really don't need the paycheck.

Without unions, the employer would screw the worker. That is why they were created in the first place.

I guess it's slightly different working for the state, especially Corrections. Basically you have to sleep with an inmate or help them escape to get fired.

A friend of mine works in corrections up in Fishkill, that big prison on the south side of 84. I hear the stories he tells me. Most are pretty funny and they seem like they make the best of the day passing time while being locked up with prisoners. And they all seem to drink a lot.

Unions have outlived their usefulness. There are tons of labor laws on the books to prevent business abuses.
and if anyone here has ever had to deal with the New Yorkistan Dept of Labor, you know the state favors the employee. Essentially, business small owners have ZERO rights when it comes to employee/employer relations.
And now that the state has a $15 minimum wage, there really is no use for unions. They did there job back in the 30's, 40's and 50's, but now the EEOC and the labor board have this covered.
In my view, the only folks that NEED a union are Miner's BUT, who gives a crap about what I think

As a contractor I occasionally pick up public works jobs - usually school remodels. I'm required to pay prevailing wages (around $48) to employees who regularly make $20. So the schools don't have enough money to provide books for all students, but have no problem paying grossly inflated costs for trade work. Brilliant.
I am also against public sector unions. BTW, I belong to one. Let them all disappear. Coppers, fire and especially the teachers unions!

Just because you have benefited from something, doesn't mean you should be REQUIRED to participate. Visitors to this site benefit in one way or another (or we wouldn't be here). Should we all be required to participate by making posts and to pay dues?

What I'm saying is that the job you take in a non union hospital that pays x amount of dollars pays that much due to the Union hospital down the road that negotiated wage increases for it's members.
My employer wanted to give us a 1 percent raise for 2 years and a zero for the third. That didn't happen due to my Union.

So you're collectively threatening your employer to pay artificially high wages - that's legalized extortion. None of you would play that hand to your employer on your own sans union, but get the gang together to threaten the employer and watch the chest-thumping begin. It's a bully tactic - a cowardly bully tactic since it's collective in nature thereby eliminating the individual's participation risk. That's not something I'd be proud of.

Actually the difference is closer to $10k. considering the difference in the cost of living probably pretty equal.
I am also not in favor of unions but of right to work laws. My previous job that was union I was at the top of scale and could go no higher. It was frustrating to watch others making the same wage and resting on brooms or washing windows while you were actually producing income for the employer. If I had the choice of not being in the union I could negotiate my own wage and benefits which would be higher than scale. And yes there are non union shops competing and paying more in the industry I work in.
To show you how concerned the union was they sided with the company to agree to no raises and actually a cut in wage to cover the benefits. So the unions are more interested in their self preservation than they are in the employees rights.
As of now I work for an evil corporation making way more money, have better benefits, and a car to drive. All with no union help.

In the 80's I started installing HVAC systems in custom mega-homes (3200ft² and up) the builder was the Vp of a union in Utica. He refused to hire union trades people because they COST TO MUCH, LOL

That's a ridiculous analogy. A 2 percent raise for 3 years doesn't even cover inflation while they have raised their prices for service by much more.

Insurance cost have remained stagnant? (btw, I have never had a business related insurnace claim in 25 years, and my insurance goes up anywhere from 5% to 15%....for no reason)
