Cross country drive - smallest bag you can bring

I have to take a cross country trip next week and I am thinking about what I should take in a small bag for "just in case". I won't have much room so this has to be a small bag, not a backpack. Starting with a Glock 19, couple of mags, box or two of ammo, SOG Seal Pup knife, Sawyer water filter, couple of lighters, some paracord . . . What else? This has to be low profile (think Greyman). Opinions please, fire away!

Shelter, water, fire, food. (After just, not getting killed of course, that's where the gun comes in)

Pack some mylar blankets, knife and paracord, compass, Lifestraw (or other), a few fire making methods, and some small energy foods. Gun? Your normal one, and an extra mag. No boxes of ammo. That can all fit in a fanny pack, but something not quite so gaudy. :)

Otherwise I'd need more details.

I'm a little confused, because I see you said "drive", and "trip." Can you clarify?

Are you driving a car across country?

Maybe a survival tent/sleeping bag?

A small hatchet?

Compass, zippo, flint or other type of fire starter. Some first aid supplies. A small hand crank solar powered radio, Maybe a couple 24he emergency good ration bars.

That's about all I can think of that you haven't already mentioned keeping a small low profile.

Yep, a car trip. I want to take the smallest bag (think canvas tool bag) that's not a backpack, with just the very basics. I may throw a cheap down sleeping bag and my Fiskars hatchet under the seat. But the bag goes in and out of the hotel room every night. It's tornado season so a small am/fm radio and wx alert radio are a must for nighttime. I will be in a pickup with no back seat.
Usually I take a backpack with a small stove, solo cookset, 3-5 days of Mountain House, sleeping bag, folding saw - the usual camping stuff, but not this time. Truck bed will be open and bag will go in my room with me. I want it separate from my suitcase.
I have dual residency in AZ and NY with CWPs from both states, so with the exception of Illinois I am covered. US Code 18, Sub 926A covers interstate transportation of the Glock for the 2-3 hours in Illinois, unloaded and locked up in a car gun safe, so I should be good going through there.

Yeah if it was my wife and I in the Ram Hemi QuadCab, it would be like my full bag with MH, stove, tent, sl bags, ammo can with 9mm and 5.56, the mini 14, swing by my buddy's place in PA and grab some high caps, put the CB and Escort radar detector, couple pairs of Ariats, maybe that .357 lever action (pictured to the left) . . . Bottle of Bulleit or Basil Hayden or Makers . . . Ya know, I should probably grab my Sig 220 Combat outta his safe too and a few hunnert rounds o' 45 hardball . . . Oh yeah, she would want all of her shoes too, especially the high heels. . .
Anyhow . . .

I still don't get it. A small backpack the size of a child's school bag could fit anywhere in your truck bed while your ccw is on you. Before you get to Illinois, your ccw goes unloaded into the suitcase. The small backpack never moves unless you want it to.

When I traveled XC in an open PU I just move the duffel from the bed to the locked cab when I stopped. I put a trash bag over it for rain, worked fine.

Will,Frankly, . . . There isn't going to be any backpack or duffel . . . Nothing else is going in the bed of the truck, it is otherwise occupied . . . Bag will be smaller than a backpack, think military butt bag size (tad smaller) . . . Bag is not green, coyote, multicam, etc. It will be low key . . Barely enough room behind standard bench seat for the two suitcases, mine and another persons, so there will not be a backpack . . . Yup, I'm wearing the Glock. Yup, it goes in the lockbox that is under the seat, unloaded, in Illinois.
So, back on topic:wave: what would YOU include in the aforementioned bag! Just looking for some ideas based on the size of the bag.:) thanks again for any ideas!

An extra lighter (you should have one in your glovebox anyways), a few granola bars, a mylar blanket or two, lifestraw or other water purification method, an extra pocket knife, some cordage, a compass, and a small radio.
