Thinking this will not be good, short term at the least, for lumber prices.
This will affect new homes market, doesn't bother me. What does bother me is the building trades in general. Home renovations, for both the small business contractor and DIYers. Unemployment will probably increase also with the lack of growth. No product, no work....

Hopefully US mills will ramp up and losses will be temporary.

What's your view?

Temporary.

We have plenty of lumber in the Pacific Northwest, and trees used for paper and construction are replanted after an area is deforested. Been this way for a long time. Canada does this all the time, hence how they turn profits. Trees do take longer than say corn or soybean, but the acreage size plots are much, much larger than one can imagine. Essentially tree farming.

A couple truck forums I'm on are talking about truck prices going up for 2025. So that will also affect goods delivery prices and what not.

Right now, looking at what my dollar is worth, including how inflated the stock market is, the current trend we are on in that topic is unrealistic.

What we need is deflation of the US Dollar. Make it so where a one cent piece costs less to mint... Right now I think it is roughly $0.018 to mint a US penny due to raw material and energy costs.

Imagine going to the store, any you pay in cash, and your total comes to $12.82, and they say sorry sir, we don't accept pennies, so you need to pay us $12.90. Don't think for a second they'll round down. Same with the whole gimmick at the cash register of rounding you bill up to the whole dollar to give to XYZ charity. Same principle.

I'm all for new construction, but not on farm land. The shit I've been seeing going on around me is unbelievable. Lands that have been farmed for decades is now turning into housing. Why not tear down old buildings and build new at the current location?? Just makes me mad when I see this.

Oh I do believe it's temporary. I'm wondering how long it would take to revamp, so to speak.
Lumber market alone could snowball many things.

What we really need is for the US dollar to become sound monies again. As described in the constitution. Somewhere past, it has been said, Trump will return the gold standard. We'll see what happens.

Tell me again, how tariffs on our measly percentages is going to hurt us!

Canada export 75% to the US Mexico exports 80% to the United States

Now tell me which countries will suffer first? Hint: Not the USA Canada and Mexico do not have any other countries that they can flood with their goods

I'm like 5% slightly concerned. Not like I'm going to lose sleep over it or go crazy.

It's only a few countries. Besides, we import a lot from many other countries that isn't going to be inflicted with tariffs.

Last time I looked under the hood of my truck for example, I want to say a good share of the parts were from Germany, Taiwan, Italy, just to name a few. Yes there are China and Mexico parts in there. But these companies aren't stupid. They can either make them in the USA or move them to another country in that part of the world and avoid import tariffs to keep cost down.

I came to largely say the same. They need us way more than we need them. Canada is broke. The only leverage Mexico has is if they didn’t allow H2A workers in to work on our farms. We will end up on the winning end. The left hates his first round of tariffs but amazingly left them in place and in fact Biden increased them.
General statements to all
Remember Canada and Mexico have no automobile manufacturing. Yes car manufacturers have places up there but they are all US based or in other countries.
Also keep in mind none of this talk went on when Biden was in office and he increased tariffs. Biden’s prices went up and no one said a word. Trumps prices haven’t even risen yet and the morons are already claiming they have. There’s no measure to monitor prices over a few days so it’s all politics

I can’t think of anything I buy that says made in Canada. Only thing I can think of that this might impact me is at times I buy sweet peppers grown in Canadian greenhouses probably some 2x4’s but most of them come from Idaho that I’ve seen recently. For all I care Canada could go bankrupt and become the 51st state.

I was looking over the numbers of the last 10 years of trade. Our trade deal with Canada minus oil is a decent one. More of a partnership really. Fair deal. Where it gets out of control is oil. Over 150 billion USD on that 10 year average goes north to our Canadian family. Now we for the most part accept this deal as we really don't need their oil and can drill ourselves for supply. But it helps our northern neighbors. So the real reason is simply Canada under Trudeau has taken advantage of us. Let me explain.

Canada allows migrants to fly into the country without documents. This began to overwhelm their system financially and strained resources. So in response the Canadian govt quietly were suggesting the United States as a final destination for these migrants and pointed them to the resources to get them to the border. New York state a major crossing. NYC housing, credit cards....aka free money the motivation.

Trump is only asking that Canada recognize the great deal they have. One which honestly is a subsidy for the Canadian govt and secure the northern border. That's all. But the Canadian problem is what to do with their current migrant policy which will break the system if they are to remain in Canada. We all know the answer but in an election cycle that would be political suicide for the left wing party in Canada.

As for tariffs as a whole, the United States is an 85% consumer economy. We buy. All spending and mostly on credit. Making nothing really of any quantity for export. This is a bad economic position for any country to be in.

WW2 victory was won because we, the U.S., out manufactured the enemy. Today that formula is the same but we cannot meet those obligations and we are reliant on foreign parts for weapons systems. lol

So we need a hard reset and for the Americans to be exposed to our real situation on the global stage. Trump is getting the conversation started. Wait til you really see how badly our friends have treated us. :beer:
