The first 'Red Dot' I ever had or tried was an EoTech with one MOA dot, because watching news footage, thats what our guys were using in theater, and buying them on their own dime I might add.
My eyes were still good and I was in awe of how easy it made shooting fast and accurate, I liked the large viewing port, heck, I liked everything about it. I used to set up milk jugs on the hundred yard berm, shoot just under them so they would start rolling and blast them on the way down. Good times!!!!! Oh yeah, that was at one hundred yards.
Astigmatism made it so I had to go to a prism and they are not near the sight of those old EoTech's. Maybe the newer ones are, dunno.

Eotechs are still good. Go to option if one gets into NVG stuff. Probably the most precise of all the reflex type sights. Battery life is not great and they are bulky and heavy compared to a red dot and a somewhat more expensive as well but the the Eotech is still a great optic nevertheless. That reticle is awesome.

I have astigmatism, and red dots look like a kindergarten drawn messy blob to me, no bueno.
I was thinking of giving a sig tango lpvo a try but I've been reading that prisms have a lot of qualities that red dots have without the dot blur.
I would ideally like some magnification because my eyes are not getting any better. So something at least 3x capable. That's why a 1-6 lpvo seems so appealing it seems to be able to cover most of what I want.
Ugh the more I've looked into this the more tradeoffs and compromises I discover.
Anyone have any wisdom to share?

I have a Vortex prism and see one red dot. I don't quite know why, but it does work for me. If you are nearby, stop in and take a peek through it.

I have the Spitfire 1X. I don't have any real complaints, it works for me and I am happy for that. I cannot describe why, but I do not believe it is as good as my old Eotech, but then I was younger then with better eye's. Believe magnification is available for it but I have not tried it and so far do not plan to.

Great points. Very practical. For a one-rifle-many-scenarios setup I really like a dot sight (both eyes open, one focal plane, better situational awareness, better eye relief, etc) then the flip down magnifier to reach out far enough to satisfy longer range targets. There are several ways to do this, and it’s really cool that we can choose whichever method suits our preferences/needs/budget$. LPVO options are plentiful and work great, too. Good eyes and irons can be every bit as good as a $2500 glass tube in the hands of a great shootist.

I had a 1x primary arms prism or two. I liked the clarity and construction. I just found that the reticle was a bit too small for me ar 1x.
I have a DDM4 V7. Excellent rifle but no way I'd pay what Daniel Defense is asking for them now. They are asking high end boutique rfle prices for basic AR features. It's hard to say with inflation what money is worth anymore but when I boought mine in 2017 for $1,300 I think it was worth it. Now they want Knights Armament or LMT level money. I'd rather just save for a little longer and get an LMT at that point. Ruger is currently offering a standard but full featured AR for around 1k, I'd get that I think.

The Ruger ARs are solid rifles. Worth their price.
Realistically, a red dot is good for shooting 2 legged vermin out to 300 yards. A LVPO will let you identify it out that far. So if you are looking to take out the guy who knocked up your sister get the LVPO. Other than that Look at a good quality Red Dot.
I ended up order a primary arms SLX 3x micro prism directly from primary arms website. When I get it I will post my thoughts.

I have a couple of green in 1x and a 3x flip up magnifier. I love them. It so nice to see a clear reticle, instead of a smeared looking red dot. The other benefit is that you can still use it with a dead battery.
I have astigmatism so I'm looking forward to it. My current red dot looks like a kindergarten scribble to my eyes so it's far from precision. Its probably useful to about 50 yards at a man sized target anything further than that and theres a very real chance the starburst dot is entirely covering my target and not even sure if I'm on target or not. It's hard to explain to people who don't have astigmatism and see starbursts.
And like you said its a great shtf sight because batteries are not required, very durable and reliable.

With the reticle illuminated and dialed in using the diopter adjuster it's very clear for my eye which is not something I'm used to. I really like the reticle. Even without it lit up it's still useful. This would be an awesome SHTF fail proof optic.
My only gripe which I knew ahead of time, is the eye relief is much more fickle than just a standard red dot. It's not terrible by any means and there are multiple mounting options to get the optic positioned where you want. I am going to have to do a lot of reps practicing shouldering and smoothly and efficiently getting behind the optic in a good position to get a sight picture.
If this had the same eye relief as a red dot it would be elite level satisfaction for me. I'm just very happy the reticle looks great to my eye. Anyone with astigmatism would appreciate it.
Those are my initial thoughts so far after messing with it for a few minutes.

How do you like the 3X, out to 50 yards, and say 300 yards? Can you measure the eye relief, and how exact to that relief do you have to be? Couple inches?, fractions of an inch?

I picked up one of these. Features and performance far outway the low cost. Glass is good. Illuminated reticle in a true 1X for quick sighting with both eyes open. Includes a cantilever mount. Heck it even has a line on the side so you don't have to bust out the levels

I just got the primary arms 1-6 Nova and a sig Romeo 7 red dot. My stigmatism doesn't seem so bad as a long as I don't over dial the brightness on a red dot.
So far I'm pretty impressed with the Nova. The Chinese have come a long way.

It's a lightweight, compact supposedly rugged 3x9 scope with wife FOV and integrated mount (same footprint as the small ACOG lug) for EoTech's pistol dot optic. Basically their version of an ACOG stack but with more versatility. I would hope for a 2nd generation FFP version though. SFP is ideal for a 1x4 or 1x6 where you are either on 1x or max so reticle holds aren't an issue. With a 3-9 I can see using tge full spectrum of magnifications though so FFP would be better. Or the ultimate thing to do would ve what March does and put an illuminated dot in the second plane and tge reticle in the first plane. That is an expensive way to go about it though and this new EoTech scope is pretty reasonably priced at 1k which is a big factor in it's appeal. I would also want a ring mount capable of taking other do footprints, EoTech uses tge Deltapoint Pro footprint and there are no dots using that that I like. Give me a K cut mount so I can mount an EPS. Best pistol dot there is right now. Fight me bro!

Then get a Romeo 4XT Pro and a good 3x magnifier then. That's what I'd get right now if I had a new rifle.
Good all-round setup. If you mix and match optic/magnifier brands, and you might because EoTech's magnifiers are probably the best, make sure the height of the optic mount and magnifier mount match up, there can be variances between what manufacturers call absolute , 1/3 ect heights. Lower 1/3 co-witness height is probably best but maybe you'd prefer a 1.93" height, check em out before you buy if you can. If you want to run NVs. Then 1.93 is better.
