Case rupture in Galil Ace 308

At the end of my new Galil Ace 308's first range trip, after a few hundred or so American Eagle 150gr brass case and 90 Tula steel case 150gr I had this happen:


At first I was panicked that I blew up the gun with a squib or there was an overpressure situation. But now I belive it was something else. I can detect no damage whatsoever to the gun itelf. Pictures of the gun to follow.

Easy solution. Tula is utter garbage. It's the only ammo that I've ever used that has given me a problem. Even for guns that were designed for steel cased.

I think what happened is I got.a sticky case that didn't want to extract and the extractor ripped up the case rim trying. I had to motar the action open and I had to poke the case out with a cleaning rod. I think its good to go.
Opinions?

Shit happens with shit ammo,,,,,,,,,,,back in the day when my AR was new I was shooting that steel cased Russian shit and had similar problems,,,,,,so basically Im going to say,,,no big deal.

Check the chamber and make sure there aren't any defects in it. If you have .308 dummies run them through your gun a few times to check for proper extraction.

Of note, as I said I had to mortar to action open and this casued the saftey to become dislodged on one side. It was an easy fix to relocate it back into its little hole with a needle nose pliers. Safety is working normally now. In my consternation I may have forced open the action while the safety was engaged, which ordinarily would prevent the action from opening.

I'd do a full fitment look over. How hard did you mortar it?

Pretty hard. Everything functions normally now.

Check to make sure you didn't crack anything loose. If everything else is functioning normally that's what I'd be most worried about.

I double checked and I can see no cracks nor even any marred areas. Chamber looks good, no scoring or scratches, there was hardly even any carbon in it.
Do you think it was just a sticky case? Thing is overgassed like any Kalashnikov type and the extractor is quite beefy. It did get the case partially unstuck too, it took only one whack with the palm of my hand on the cleaning rod to pop the case out.

Take a look at the picture with unfired cartridge next to it. Doesn't the coating on the bad one look thin and light in comparison? Perhaps that what caused it to stick?

Could of been. Steel is a bitch like that. If everything looks good I'd suggest another 100 rounds of literally anything but Tula. Ya know, just to be sure.

Hard to tell without seeing it before it was fired. It could look thin right now just because it's already been ran through a gun, fired and then mortared out of the chamber.

I'd say go. Hell if the gun functions fine, there's no danger in it any more than before. Plus now it's a valid excuse to hit the range again.

Like I said. Tula is the only ammo I've ever had really much up a range day. I had to replace the firing pin in my sks cause their soft primers popped so damn often.

So its definitely a case of the rim getting raped by the stubborn extractor?

It was a real shame because it was running great up till that point. There is definite potential of accuracy in this rifle. Kinda hard to tell at 25 yards and with that fatass front sight post though. This think is begging for optics. I am gonna through an ACOG on it I think. I did repeatedly one hole my sight in groups.

It's still the case getting jammed in the chamber, but a rupture would be more alarming, especially with steel case, cause it can damage chamber.

I don't think it's an extractor. The case got stuck in the chamber for what ever reason or a defective or out of spec. case

I always clean the chamber when I clean the barrel.

Stuck case, look at all the rub marks. I’d polish up the chamber seeing that the rifle is new. Gets rid of all the tiny machining marks. Steel ammo allows a lot of blow back into the chamber because it doesn’t expand like brass and that’s what jambs you up.
