It's amazing something like this actually managed to get adopted.
I wish the cartridge had been able to be developed more. Its ballistics were perfect for military use even right up to today. A little extra velocity, a smaller higher pressure case.... We could be rocking a 6mm cartridge right now doing everything the 5.56 does but better and with better range potential.

I don't think the Glock pistol was innovative at all. HK had released the first polymer frame, striker fired gun. Strikers themselves were a well known thing have been used in bolt actions for many decades already and it used the well known Browning tilting barrel lockup. The use of the barrel hood and ejection port as the locking interface was first seen in SIGs.
About the only actually design difference I can think of is that Glock used a wider magazine with parallel stacks for extra capacity in a given length. I suppose another innovation was the trigger system itself utilizing a mostly precocked striker and incorporating the remaining striker travel into the passive safety systems.
