I had Dick's ask for my permit, when I said rifle, they just entered a generic number. Gander asked rifle or pistol, and when I said rifle, they just asked for DOB. It was for .22lr in both cases.
From the NRA-ILA website listing of NY gun laws:
"It is unlawful for any dealer in firearms to sell any ammunition designed exclusively for use in a pistol or revolver to any person who is not authorized to possess a pistol or revolver. NY Penal Law § 270.00. "
The keyword, I admit, is...
It is law. Stores are not to sell pistol ammo to someone without a matching pistol on their permit.
Dick's did ask for my permit, but they were okay when I said my .22lr was for a rifle.
I'm thinking of getting a lever action rifle in pistol caliber, but being in NY, will I run into difficulty getting ammo because it's for a pistol (which I don't have)? Or will LGS's generally be understanding? Thanks.
The USA Today article says nothing about citizenship, the other site says the public records show the suspect is from Puerto Rico, which makes him a US citizen.
