Hubby got some practice in the other day. He'd gone out to PA to put his new tires on the TJ and there was a groundhog digging a big hole next to the foundation of the house. He sends me a text picture that says 'Ran over a groundhog. With my .308', lol.

How does one get into hunting with no one to learn from? No one in my family are really hunters.
I didn't either. Neighbor showed me how to gut my 1st one. Everything else was from reading and applying it out in the field. You learn more each year what works and what doesn't. You never stop learning.
I learned from going in the woods and sitting.
My first deer I dressed and butchered myself with no training, I was 16 years old.
Over the years I got better at it.

I do manage to stalk a buck most years, but where did the frolicking in my yard deer go???

Haha. Went out for fall turkey one year. I'm sitting there in the woods, rustling leaves around with my hand (like a turkey foraging). Never did see a turkey, but at one point I heard a noise behind me, and when I turned to look there was a BIG buck about 10 feet behind me. Put another stand up the other day. Did some clearing yesterday. Located on one trail and I got a 2nd trail to my right. Hope it's a good spot for the season. My other spot had some lower activity last year. The deer are not going in woods as far as they used to the last couple years

When the best plans go south. Hunting season is almost upon us. Everyone goes scouting for that perfect place. Deer sense more activity in area and change their movements. They move to more secluded areas, away from trails, roads and humans. Food is not the issue, they eat most anything
around. Security matters and any Buck more than a year old heads for deep cover. Deer become nocturnal. The happy hunter is in deep cover!

Deer by me like the brush for sure but hunting in brush is foolish imo. No corn field deer here. These are swamp donkeys for sure. Unless I can see it fully, I am not taking that shot. When the rut comes the buck just don't care where the hell they are.

Personally I do not hunt Old swamp bucks, ducks or anything else in a swamp. Having tasted Old Swamp bucks and domestic ducks and I pass.
You get a young doe or buck it is editable but once they live there for years they taste like the swamp.
