You have to rotate it because of the slide stop.

Mine has one as well. My dad did it and I added to it. Growing pains. No biggie.

You don't have to rotate it, but it's easier to do it that way.

I scratched mine the first time I dissembled it. Figured I'd get it out of the way so I wouldn't have to worry about it anymore.

I can honestly say, after having disassembled and reassembled a rather large number of 1911s, both of my own as well as those belonging to many others (to work on generally), I have never once put the 'idiot scratch' on one. However, that said, I was well aware of this issue from having read so many gun magazines and such from a very young age so I was quite prepared for it by the time I had ever handled one.

One 1911 I currently own does have a little one though , put there by the previous owner.

I try to avoid the scratch as it would bug the crap out of me.

Try using a guitar pick or a thin piece of plastic (like your driver license to set the slide stop.)

I removed the scratch from mine with a Scotchbrite pad, of course it's a stainless 1911.

Mine probably have one or the other of those scratches on them, they just aren't very deep or noticeable. On my full size, the slide stop can go straight in without too much trouble.

You know what's worse then the average idiot scratch, one put there by someone else. I very much appreciate the old timers down at the range, they are full of shooting knowledge, however what they fail to realize as good a shot as they are (yes far better then I) thier hand strength and fine motor skills are not as great as it use to be and when it comes to putting back together a field strip. DONT TOUCH ANOTHER GUYS 1911. HE ISNT HAVEING TROUBLE! HE KNOWS WHAT HES DOING! HE PUTS IT TOGETHER THAT WAY BECAUSE HE IS IN NO RUSH AND KNOWS HOW TO PREVENT SCRATCHES?

OK rant over, yes I'm still a little pissed and it's been 2 years.

It,s true folks when you take your time and everything is lined up properly the slide release goes in, no scratches. And yes on models with a bushing and spring plug, they comes out for a reason, to relieve pressure on the slide ... allowing for ... you guessed it a scratch less essembly.

If I needed to put a gun together that quickly I wouldn't be takeing it apart in the first place.

Did I mention I'm still a bit annoyed 2 years later.

There is the fast and easy way of doing things and there is the right way. I noticed everyone who thinks the fast and asy way is better has a sctrach on the frame or slide. Just take your time. I have not added any scraches since that ill fated day the sky's went black.

My stainless is bead blasted, I prefer the look but from now on I will opt for brushed. This reminded me to get a quote for a touch up.
