Two Monroe County deputies injured in firearm accident

Sounds like some deputies need to take gun safety 101. Cleaning a firearm while it's loaded? The 1st thing you do when manipulating any firearm is to check if it is loaded! And, how were they cleaning the barrel when loaded? Then, picking it up "by the trigger"?

Of course, there's also the issue that if a civilian did this, there would be at a minimum reckless endangerment charges filed.

Not all that surprising. It wasn't that long ago that I saw someone else posted another negligent discharge of a firearm by an officer. Good thing no other bystanders were killed. They should be suspended and have mandatory gun safety and range training before they return to serving and "protecting" anyone else. Obviously they don't know how to handle a firearm properly, especially when it's emitted.

Hmmm......I guess maybe I could see this. Not sure I am buying it. Maybe one guy was handing it to the other and he dropped it?

Glad they're ok. Seems truly accidental if story accurate. I dropped my LCP when putting it away one night and somehow stopped myself from grabbing for it. I can see how this might happen.

Hmm, incident took place late Saturday night/early Sunday morning? While cleaning.... right..... Sounds to me like some some drunk dudes were playing with guns and got burned. Everyone I hear about a "cleaning ND" it sounds like an excuse to cover up whatever way stupider activity was taking place.

Late Saturday night into very early Sunday morning, cleaning guns - I have better things to do on Saturday nights and that very often involves alcohol and zero handling of firearms. I am guessing though that these two officers were into cleaning guns, as a pair, within that time frame and that there was absolutely no alcohol involved.

Hate to break it to you but civilians have negligent discharges all the time. "Surprisingly" (hopefully the sarcasm is obvious), those aren't considered newsworthy so since only cops' get reported, obviously we know only cops have negligent discharges...

Does the "cleaning" story sound fishy to you as well though? I think these guys know enough to drop mag, rack and clear. I'd bet money they were goofing around and it bit them in the ass. Happens, lesson learned..... hopefully. I would find it more disturbing if it actually was the result of trying to clean the arm, shows a lack of basic gun handling technique as opposed to have a case of dumbassitis.

So, naughty me, I didn't read the second article. Sounds like it was a simple error, bobbled the gun, now loaded for service after cleaning, and in attempting to catch it a finger got in the guard and pressed the trigger, bang.
So ya, good saftey tip @dwa12479, bobble a gun just let it drop, pick it up after. Not really something I had thought about before but now I'll keep it in mind. So I am no longer dubious, sounds like one of those freak things, glad the injuries are not serious and I've learned from their mistake.

I never clean my guns. Too dangerous. People get shot and killed cleaning their guns....i just cant risk getting shot while cleaning my guns.....so i dont clean them.

And i shoot a glock. (Used to use a 1911....too much cleaning for me. 24 years of cleaning it got to be too much. Too much risk of getting shot as well! I am lucky to still be alive. )

My grandfather had a ND when cleaning a pistol. He was going down to Fl for a few weeks to take care of some business so he wanted to make sure the pistol was ready to go for my grandmother in case she needed it. He went to disassemble it and had a ND. A week or two later my grandmother ran out of checks so she opened up the filing cabinet to get another book out. Guess what had a nice hole, right through the center? She had to go back to the back and order more check books. Smart people (he was an engineer, avid hunter, been around firearms all his life) occasionally drop their guard and do dumb things.

Absolutely. I am paranoid about gun safety because of this. I think it is only natural for people to drop their guard if they have been doing an activity for a long period of time. It could happen to any of us.

Supposedly he shouted "I have a pistol permit" right after the shot, as if that made it any better. I don't recall any follow up story so I don't know if anything happened to his permit or not.

Three years ago. His permit was suspended and he was charged with felony reckless endangerment. I can't find any information about what became of his case or his permit after that.
