Ah, good ole' split rims. They've killed many a man over the years, nicknamed the widow maker.. There's a reason that you're supposed to inflate them inside a special cage with a chain through the center hole.

My statement is 100% true. Your example happened in public, in what I assume was a crowded restaurant. Of course that is newsworthy. As far as charges, well that is dependent on too many factors to compare cases, even amongst LEO's. If I did that in NYC, I'd be charged. Cops other places, maybe not.
The vast majority of ND's happen at home during cleaning and are never reported... unlesss... the individual is a cop.

Well there was an injury here too, that almost guarantees some public notice, LE or not. Imagine how much worse this could have been.

Well, if someone gets shot, then they pretty much get reported. The guy who puts a round into his basement wall just has to deal with his ears ringing and his wife, but if medical attention is necessary, its going to get investigated at least on some level.
Here is a good related question, has anyone else here checked a gun that you firmly believed was unloaded, just as a formality, and found out it *was* loaded ?
I did that once, took a rifle out of a locked case, checked it out of habit, and said "holy shit". You'll never feel like its just a formality again after that...

Yes. This is why we ALWAYS check them.
No quite the same but this also happened to me once. Not sure how it happened. We were shooting pistols. I unloaded. Re-holstered. My turn at line (pistol match)i come up to load. As i do an empty case flies out. How the fuck is there an empty case in my chamber? I shot it (case ahould have ejected). I "checked" it to make it clear (obviously not well). Came to line to find empty case in gun.
Never checked the case that closely. It may have been a 380 i shot outta my 9, and the extractor did not pull the case out the 1st two times.
Who knows. I DQ'd myself. It is a cold range. Having a case in the chamber is not cold. I realize it was an empty case, but there should have been NOTHING in the chamber.

I received a gun by mail (from another dealer), that i firmly believed (should have been) unloaded
I also had a guy bring a gun, in a case, into my shop, that i firmly believed (should have been ) unloaded.
I do remember that happening to me, just not the details.
I've had it happen numerous times with guns from other people, especially perps. I've had cops hand me guns from perps that they say they cleared and I find a round in the chamber. Especially rifles.

They just expect us "civilians" to screw up, that's why we shouldn't be allowed to have them.

Which may make a cop's ND "news worthy", but I believe I was speaking to a comment along the lines of it's only ever cops you hear about.

With all due respect, it is not only cops having accidental/negligent discharges that we read or hear about. We can read and or hear about non-LEOs having accidental / negligent discharges, in the news, quite frequently especially when they also involve injuries just like the incident in question with the two LEOs who were both injured. Sometimes you even hear about them when no injuries are involved but that is a bit less likely unless there is some pomp and circumstance that makes it newsworthy - like it happened at a gun show or in a kindergarten classroom or to an officer on patrol.
Out of curiosity, I ran a search on one of the MSM's (Mud Slinging Media's) antigun type websites, that of CNN. I got several pages of results. I copied the links for the individual shootings reported; in other words if one shooting was reported in several articles (either as a repeat or as a continuing story) I only gave a single link for it. On the other side of the coin, if one article mentioned more than one unrelated accidental/negligent discharges, I counted each shooting as an incident of it being reported. I am reporting on the number of incidents involving accidental/negligent discharges that I found reported, not on how many times a single incident was reported on. I must point out, one article details reports of three separate accidental/negligent shootings as will be seen in more detail below. Whether or not there were injuries was not taken into consideration. What I found was in essence this, a total of five (5) incidents involving accidental/negligent discharges by police and a total of nine (9) incidents involving civilians. Again, in either case police or civilians I am counting not how many reports but how many incidents were reported:

I am certain that if I queried it in other ways than the term I used "accidental discharge", such as using accidental hooting or negligent discharge or negligent shooting or whatever, I would find more of the same for each group.
Yes both police and civilian accidental/negligent shootings get reported quite frequently from the look of it.
Run the same query and your results may differ as things change on the web but who knows they may come out the same. I am guessing we would get similar results on any major news site.

Yes. Cleaning seems to be the scapegoat always. If I'm ever negligent where I have one too, I'll probably use the cleaning routine too. I mean, why not?
