There are a couple of retired tree stands and an old small shack on a trailer that the old boy use to sit in when he hunted, I'm about ready for it.

There are a couple of retired tree stands and an old small shack on a trailer that the old boy use to sit in when he hunted, I'm about ready for it.

Tried to post Saturday, but couldn't find the url data for the picture on my phone, so this works. Was only out for about an hour or so, had kicked my hoodie up bc ears were starting to get a little chilly. Already have shitty hearing anyways, heard a muffled noise to my left and saw two doe walking up the hill. They were perfectly broadside, so I sighted up, forgot about my ear pro, quickly inserted that, zoomed in a bit and sighted up again. As I did, they moved up the hill a bit and I thought I had lost my chance. They stopped, and I sighted up on the one I could see. Couldn't see the face bc it was behind a tree, but I could see the shoulder and I put it slightly behind it and shot. Might have pulled it slightly, but I couldn't tell. Other one took off running and I couldn't see the other. Look again and I see a leg flipping over. Ab0ut 50-60y away on another ridge, so I message @NirvanaFan who had heard the shot and already asked if that was me. Yup. Tell him to grab the 4 wheeler and come over. It's a few ridges over from where I am, and slightly higher up the hill.
Come up on it and it's evident that it must have died pretty quickly. It dropped and rolled down the hill, which is why I saw the leg flip. Rolled a good 20 feet, good amount of blood everywhere.
Unfortunately, shot it through both shoulders, but also took off the top half of the heart. Button buck too
but like we said later, at that distance, I couldn't tell. I thought I had two doe. Oh well, first one is in the books. Going next weekend, hope to get another oneGutting was interesting. Made a mess of the butt, but I didn't make a mess of the stomach, so there's that. Few videos I watched before had guys with mini saws separating the hips and rib cage for better access. I could see how that could be helpful because I had a hard time finding the windpipe to cut. Did most of it though, with a little help, and then we both tandem stripped the meat because we had to go.

My uncle showed me a way to get the lungs/wind pipe out way easier than trying to double hand in the chest cavity to cut it. It only works if you're not going to mount it, though. You actually cut the wind pipe at the base of the neck. Once you do that, all you have to do is grab hold of the lungs in the chest and pull.

Shot this large doe Sunday morning. She had a lot of fat on her. 30-40 yard shot. Took out a piece of the heart and the lungs. Didn't hit either shoulder, so no meat was ruined. Perfect shot. Getting her back to the house was a bitch. I almost flipped the 4 wheeler going up the hill.
I will end up keeping half the burger meat and giving the rest to my parents. I still haven't seen any bucks. Oh well, hopefully they make it to next year and are even bigger.

I thought I was shooting a doe. My heart sank when I discovered to tiny spikes just over 3 inches. Then I remembered, I was in 3M.
I shot the deer from an elevated position at the top of a sleep slope. Probably why it didn’t smell me. The deer was struck on the left side. The wound you see is the exit.
I thought I missed because it just bounced off. But, I found a blood trail about a meter wide. It expired after about 50 yards.

You'd be surprised at how many people think they missed and just don't investigate enough to recover the deer.
The first week I was with my brother when he shot a full size doe in the left front shoulder, He turned and said "I missed".
I was watching the doe and seen the hit, as I watched it run I seen the deer start to stagger then out of sight. This deer was standing broad side completly still, took of like a bat out of hell. The 7mm08 shot split her heat in half,she ran about fifty yards just out of sight when she went down for the count.
Nice shot on that buck, some good eating there. I like that size for the table.

I'm surprised it ran, with a shot like that. While gutting mine and processing the meat, I found that not only did I accidentally shoot both shoulders, but basically shot both joints apart, and shot the top half of the heart off. Mine dropped on the spot.

Probably had it in the trailer, but I'm guessing he was going up the hill to get to the deer to gut it.
I shot it up on the hill. I almost flipped the 4 wheeler going up the hill to get it. Coming back down was easy. I just dragged it back with a rope attached to the ball.

My oldest son shot a doe on the second saturday of the season with his Ruger 77/264 caliber that was just standing there broad side, basiclly the same shot placement a the doe my brother shot. My son's doe dropped in it's tracks. My son's shot also shattered that deers heart just like my brothers shot did.
Just goes to show, you just never know.
Meat in the freezer! I use a limb saw and cut up as far as I
I can to the base of the neck, I grab the wind pipe, pull it down as best I can then cut it. As far as the other end, I split down through to the pelvic bone with my knife, then I use the limb saw through that bone, put a hand on either side of the bone and push down until I hear the rest of the bone crack. I pull the cord threw the split then cut. No turds, and no mess.

I keep reading everyone who shot a deer that wasn't a "mature deer" apologizing for shooting that deer. My question is...are you hunting for a trophy or to put meat in the freezer to provide additional meat for your family? If it's the later, fuck it and stop apologizing, you did your job and what you set out to do. When you sit down with your family to enjoy your bounty, does it matter if it scored 180 Boone and Crocket points or it was a spike, NO, your provided, that's the reason we all should be hunting. If we are lucky enough to shot a trophy, congrats, but meat in the freezer is what's most important. They all died so we can live and we should appreciate that, not the size, period!

Next year when I come back to the Communist State of Andrew's Republic of New Yorkistan I'll do a video on How I go about field dressing a deer.
Other videos would help others as well. There are a bunch of guys who never shot a deer and others who had the field dressing done for them.
For me personally I have no problem, I have field dressed and butchered a whole lot of deer over the last forty years.
Plus I had available downed dairy cows to slaughter and butcher. Now i Slaughter the cows, shoot them, gut them, quarter them up and drop them off to butcher shop to get butchered, cut up, wrapped & frozen.
But videos would help a bunch of guys out when the moment comes they are successful.

It's been a pretty dismal season for me. Between Dr appointments for my wife, a sweet but missed buck, and my truck being broke down for the past week, I haven't been out much. Hopefully this weekend I can get out for regular season. Gave my Encore handcannon a once over for Monday's start of ML season so maybe I can connect with that again. She gave me a nice 8pt a couple years ago. At this point I'll be happy with a big fat doe

I was only sorry for identifying my buck as a doe. I thought for a moment that I might not get to keep it because of the antler restriction in 3J. Then I remembered that the property was just inside 3M. I’m all about the meat and I don’t think I could fit a mature buck in the trunk of my Toyota. I was hunting for a nice Toyota trunk sized doe. I still have DMP tags for 3J and 3M.

There haven't been many deer taken near home this year. I know they are there but been elusive. Very few hunt ML around here so I should have some great opportunities. Hopefully lol.
My wife is doing better slowly. She is in remission from cancer 1 year now but a couple months ago woke at 3:30am and couldn't breath. Her O2 sat dropped to 65% so 911 got a call. She spent a week in the hospital fighting a lung infection. She hasn't been able to get of O2 since. Ok when she sits around but when she starts moving about it drops to the 80's. But, getting better.
The positive side of this whole last situation, it scared her so bad she quit smoking! Finally!

When NF told me that I'd figure it out eventually, I watched a Youtube video like @HighlandLofts suggests here. Found a video where the guy did this exact thing, saw and everything. Seemed to work pretty damn well.
As far as trophy/meat goes - sure I wanted a decent buck for my first one, but like you said, this was all about food for me. I only lamented my shot because I didn't want to shoot something young. Otherwise, I was happy w/ my first year of hunting.
Finally got all my meat packaged this weekend w/ @NirvanaFan I ended up getting 11lbs of hamburger, 5lbs of sausage, and various steaks, roasts, and sandwich cuts. I'm definitely happy w/ that, since I'm gonna eat most of it.
