If you have an Ash tree most likely a sign it is too late. The Asian Ash Bore Beetle has wrecked havoc. Lost a bunch of trees in the last 2 years. Had to cut 2 down not long ago to protect house and self.

Third season hunting, pulled an 0-fer, didn't see shit all season except that fork on opening day. Went out again a few more times, Friday was my last. Went down in the afternoon and tried a stand @NirvanaFan has on his parent's property. Old little fort, but gave me a nice north/south view. Didn't see anything til about 415 or so, saw the same damn fork again, way off to the north. He was a ways away, and I waited for him to present, and then he walked behind a tree and disappeared. Must have gone down into a valley or gotten lucky. Really bummed.
He sent me some trail cam pics from my usual spot, and of course 5 doe ran through my spot Sunday morning
so that sucks. We're gonna try to plant some food plots next season
Red dot on the one pic was where he was, over 100y away, and thick brush. I watched and waited and just as he turned away to even give me a shot worth considering, he moved into the shit. Other two shots are the views. To my left (behind the tree) is a swamp where there's lots of tracks. In front of me is a trail with lots of tracks. My usual spot is up that trail and to the left of it where it starts going up the hill. I can't see this stand or that trail from my usual spot unless I climb up another 20y from where I sit. It has potential, there were tracks practically under this fort too, and it's got a nice long view and a propane heater

Yeah, same here. NF thought they were moving differently than normal, and I have heard from a few people that people are going out a lot and coming home empty-handed.

I'm at fault for getting nothing thus far. Had a 4-6 with a red dot on his broadside at 35 yards first thing opening day and passed him up. Watching him walk away I 2nd guessed my thinking.

I don't have data to back it up but from what I've been seeing with my own eyes, the populations both at home and where I hunt have been declining for the last 5 years at least.
I'm done shooting does - too much population impact. I'd kill a button buck first.

I personally saw a high number of bucks during bow season where I am at. Not a lot of rut activity this season that I personally saw but did see a decent amount of deer during rifle also.
I agree with you on the does. I haven't gone for does in a couple of years and noticed an increase in bucks this year. I did let a smaller 6 go last year and he might just be the nice 8 I got this year. My buck dry spell fortunately has passed. Saw at least 3 different spikes, a 4ptr and the 8 this year.

20 years ago it wouldn't be unusual for me to see 50+ different deer on opening day. I haven't even seen half that this entire year and many were probably repeats. I know the one I shot, I'd seen before. Him and another yearling with forks so small I doubt you could legally use a buck tag on him were the only bucks I saw. Something is very different and I'm seeing similar trends at locations that are 60 miles apart. Both have heavy agriculture - they should be able to support relatively high populations.

BUT, report that you took your doe(s)! If enough people do that, then maybe it will cut down on the number of doe tags they give out in a certain area. If you can get your buddies, and neighbors to do the same for a couple of years, I would bet you'd start seeing more deer after a couple of years.
Managing a herd is REALLY tough, unless you have control over some significant property. If you can get others to show some restraint in your hunting area, the herd size, and quality can recover. BUT, like I posted above, report that you 'tagged' out for full capacity, so the DEC will begin to cut back on the numbers of doe tags issued.

Overall, this was a pretty shitty season for me. We didn't see many deer on the property, and nobody got a decent shot at a good buck. I found some nice bucks on the trail cameras, but never saw them during the season. I tagged one small buck during bow season, and couldn't get anything else until the last evening of the regular season. I shot a good sized doe 1 minute before official sunset on Sunday afternoon.
I've got plans to put in a couple food plots next year. I'm still deciding what, but I'm thinking clover and brassicas. Maybe put in a small one of chicory or oats or something.

Well, however you've been hunting try something different but don't quit you'll get him.
Definitely cant hurt. Hunting is like gambling. You have to be in it to win it but there no guarantee obviously. Some years, I have hunted hard to have no activity or basically been a babysitter for fawns. Other years, like this year, I barely went out, missed entire early bow season and got lucky on 3rd day out. One thing I always do lately and that seems to work for me is when I go in the woods and on the way to my stand, I make a few doe calls as to not spook whats nearby. Where there are does during the rut, the odds go up of a buck staying nearby. I have had occassion where the calls got me extremely close to does with no clue.

First, I had to take down my tree stands second week of October. The guy who was leasing the property moved and the landlord wouldn't let me keep my stands there.
I ended up with no place to go opening day of rifle. I did get a place to sit 2nd day but saw nothing. I have access to a horse farm but not opening weekend.
I was able to get out the nest two weekends. I don't know if it was me or the rifle. I'll have to check in the spring to see if the scope got knocked off zero. I missed the two shots I was able to take. One at 187 yds and the other at 146. The last weekend my m-i-l died and I helped my wife with things for a few days.
Oh well, maybe next year. I have a co-worker invite me to Maine for ice fishing end of January and I have a dairy farm looking to eradicate some woodchucks come spring.

Oh, never quit, one bad year or a few bad years won't turn me off. Just hanging w/ NF is enough to keep doing it. Love the time out, love being out there. I also will not kill a deer for the sake of filling the tag. I'll either take a big enough doe or I'll wait for that big buck. I wanna see what that fork looks like next season. I think I've got some great spots, and the trail cams and the tracks prove it. I just need to be there when they are, as one trail cam showed on the last day that a pack of doe walked through at 9:54am, lol.
