I know about the over watering. We mixed the long asian style cucumbers with the traditional round an fat ones and alot of them came out super bitter where they had to be thrown out. First time we did that so idk

It’s now down to $50/length but by the time you add in the fittings for each side you’re around $60/ length. I last looked about 4 months ago so maybe it was $10 less per length and I’m remembering incorrectly or I factored in taxes.
I need to hang it with minimal supports so that’s my desire to use schedule 40 as well. I need to hang it over my tortoise table and I need access to her habitat.

You can get bush ones but I prefer the ones that grow on the ground. You can grow spinach or arugula under cukes as well.

Do not buy these kinds of items from the Home Depot kinds of stores. Go to a plumbing wholesale company like IRR Supply. Much cheaper.

I’ll have to check it out. My BIL’s brother is a plumber so maybe he could get me a discount but I won’t ask. I’ll bring it up around my BIL and see if he offers, if not it’s probably not worth it because it’s such a small amount of pipe and I do t want to put him out.

with todays cost 35 bucks for the PVC .. would make 2 .. 4 foot long hydro growers .. or 1 8 footer
then a pond pump 350gph or bigger .. and some 3/8 or 1/2 in vinyl tubing for the water line , water res . ect
you could still make one for under 200 bucks i think ..
to buy a kit .. lots of bucks ..

Actually the square tubing might be a good idea because I can only have them be 8’ long anyway and with the 10’ piping I’m losing so much liking that I’m paying for. I could caulk or weld them on and have the drain at the bottom with a bulkhead and flexible tubing draining into the next one instead of hard piping it all with PVC. on the spray line in the square tube , i just drilled a 1/16 inch hole for each net pot up the line and then aimed the water stream to just hit the bottom of the net pop .. water level was about 2 inches deep before it when over the drain back in to the reservoir

I bought 6 food grade buckets for my bucket gardening project, three cubic feet of peat moss and 1.5 cubic feet of good organic soil. I’ll add in a bunch of rabbit poop and some worms in each container. I’ll add fruit and veggie scraps along with some coffee grounds to get some composting going on quickly. I bought a bunch of European nightcrawlers for ice fishing and I put a slice of banana in there 4-5 days ago and it’s gone already and they are working on the next slice. Quick little buggers and they work fast.

Raised bed came today and my oldest son helped me out it together. For $120 after tax to my door I’m very impressed. I do believe it’s cedar and it smells like it. It has nice wheel and the shelf below it nice. All mill work was nice, it came with nice caps, and everything was thought out well. I could not have bought the wood for what I paid. All edges are routed to be smooth.

I made up some soil today for the raised beds and I will finish it this weekend for my buckets. I took promix, raised garden bed soil, peat moss, and a bunch of rabbit poop and mixed it all together. I’m waiting for my perlite to come becuase Homedepot said they had it but didn’t. It will be here Friday. I’ll mix in some perlite and add 2-3” of perlite to each bucket bottom for drainage and make the buckets lighter. This weekend is good anyway since I change my rabbits litter once per week and I’ll have more poop to make my second batch. That should be prefect. Then I’ll bring the buckets in and add 10-20 worms per bucket and hope they reproduce like crazy and I’ll have them for fishing all winter and spring. I’ll keep a bucket or two of them going and see how it works out. My son seems really into it so why not.

I made up more soil today and the raised bed is now full. I need to work in some perlite when it arrives on Friday and I’ll be done with that. Buckets have holes drilled in them and landscaping fabric lining the bottom but I need to fill the bottom 3” with perlite before proceeding.
The worms are eating super fast and have eaten almost an entire banana by now. Im starting to see some eggs in the worm containers so I’m happy with that. I will add more soil and get another container tomorrow to expand their area. I’ll add the eggs to the bucket gardens along with some worms to get that colony going. This is kind of fun and who knew worms would be this interesting. Im always looking to learn and try something new for fun.

I guess ima give it another go this year… picked up another store ( same company new location) anybody retired and gota cdl? I could use a second driver july-October. Easy hours maybe 3-4 a day ?!?! Anyone ? lol I’m fucked …. Not adding anything new but doing 10% more on everything to supply new store and adding 2500 10” mums which is gonna kick my ass setting up that new grow field. I’ve spent more this year on supplies then ever before… wish me luck.

My soil is don’t. My perlite arrived today. I have six 5 gallon buckets and two 2x4 raised beds set up.
My soil mix is as follows
Promix
Pear moss
Rabbit litter pans
Raised bed garden soil
Perlite
All mixed together and the soil looks great. Nutritious, dark, loose, should drain great and hold water well.
Buckets are the same with the exception of 3-4” of perlite on the bottom. I now have 3, soon to be 4 work containers for composting and worm compost to feed my plants.
I’m going to remove a small raised bed of strawberries and grow herbs in there this year since the strawberries don’t perform well there anyway.

I won’t drop and neither will my prices. Gonna have to bump everything up. Have to rename the farm to “take it or leave it farm” prices were good last year but fuel was crazy especially with the drought we had.

That’s good that you are able to raise your prices or that prices went up. I know a lot of farmers by me had trouble getting rid of their good crop of apples. There was no storage and no bins to be had anywhere. Prices were not as good as they should have been.

Apples are a whole other ball game… onions too on the muck soils. I will say tho for as much as those guys like to cry they seem to have a new truck every couple years and spend a few weeks in the Yucatán every winter…
what’s gonna kill the farming in NYS is the overtime. The migrants don’t want to come here and only work 40 hours. Are there jobs that justify 28-30$ an hour? Sure but there’s lots that don’t, the only way to make up for it is raising prices. What many don’t understand is we’re not a normal factory job. Yes some weeks I work 100-120 hours, then ten days later it might rain for three days and I do a 40 hour week. Then winter comes and there’s practically no work for three months. Problem is you got a buncha nyc do-gooders who have no concept of the lifestyle making the laws. Sound familiar huh?

some new strawbeery plants and couple cherry trees this yr. been lucky last few yrs, local town mulches their leaf pick up, puts it out the next yr in a parking lot for residents to pick up. i have a connection there with a dump trailer, get a couple loads delivered last few yrs for a 30 pak.

I think the apple and onion guys do so much better because they have farms that have been in their families for years and years and the new variety of apples are fairly profitable. Also I think some of their inputs are less since they don’t need to till up fields, transplant, pay for plants and many of the larger trees once established don’t need irrigation.
For a veggie farmer like yourself your flailing the field, buying transplants, planting them, irrigating the shit out of them, weeding, spraying and then all your costs are on par with the apple guys. Veggies are fairly labor intensive.
I’ve heard the same with the overtime from many farmers in my area. I’m rather worried honestly. I think only the very small and very big farms will be able to stay around. You’ll have a few apple guys and a few veggie guys and that’s it. Or most of NYS will just go row crops where labor isn’t needed but then the state will bitch about that too.
