Who owns a .22lr pistol?

Has it helped you improve your shooting? What do you own?



I am trying to decide where to go for my next pistol (unfortunately I'm not made of money so I'm on a budet). I want MANY pistols but I think I've settled on getting 1 per year.

I currently own a walther PPSm2 and use it as my EDC. I have a slight tendency to push my shots slightly left I believe due to anticipating the shot. I'm working on improving this. Would stepping down to a .22lr assist in improving fundamentals?

I can't decide if I should just stick with 9mm and make my next purchase something similar to a G19/17 sized gun (something in the compact to duty size) range. I've shot my friends G19 which I really liked and thought I did significantly better on. That's why I'm thinking to go this route and just keep practicing.
or
go with a .22lr and shoot it more since ammo is pretty cheap and available now.

Dry fire practice is your friend.

A P22QD can be had for relatively cheap. I'd get one of those and get some inexpensive practice. Like S&W mentioned, dry firing will help too.

Back when I was raising my kids and strapped for cash I did a Lot of dry fire exercises. I even read an article on trigger control where you stack a couple of coins on the end of your gun and practice pulling the trigger until you can do it without disturbing the coins. That, is an exercise in trigger control!

Most the time when I’ve seen someone shoot low left it’s their grip. Not enough pressure with the left hand. To much pressure from the right hand

The military uses the term 'perishable commodity' for many disciplines learned, or you could say, 'what you don't use you loose'. Of all the shooting sports, handgun shooting proves this out faster than any of them. Constant practice is the only way to stay sharp.
I bought a Buck Mark, .22 and yes it has helped me maintain good shooting posture and actually made it obvious to me that I need to work on my trigger control. I agree with the dry firing, but some like the Buck Mark recommend that you do not dry fire.

Exactly , I own several .22Lr pistols and I cannot think of one reason Not to own one. They’re fun to shoot, .22 is fairly inexpensive and you don’t have to break the bank to buy a decent pistol.

I have a Ruger SR22 and a Sig 1911-22. Both are fun to shoot and ammo is inexpensive

I bought the ruger sr22 just for this very same reason. Very similar to my carry gun in size and controls. Not the most accurate of pistols though.

love 22lr pistols own a Smith Victory which is an awesome piece and have a Beretta 92 conversion kit and a Kimber conversion kit. try to shoot a couple of 100 rounds a week really helps with the fundamentals.

I couldn't agree more! Years ago I got a .45/.410 barrel for a Thompson contender and shot clay pidgons with it, that deer season I drew and shot a moving six pointer at 200 yards with out even thinking. Practice makes perfect!

To the OP. Get a .22 and shoot it, it's fun and cheap and you can learn a lot.

Mark IV are great as they are inexpensive, dependable and great fun to shoot. There is a huge selection of aftermarket parts as well. I love mine and I can't shoot it enough!

I have a Glock 17 frame that I put a .22lr conversion kit into. That's the gun that I put into the hands of brand new shooters. Once they're comfortable with that, I'll put a G17 in their hands. Same gun, same feeling, just different caliber. It's worked pretty well so far.

I'd get the Ruger. Depending on who you talk to, the Walther can be real finicky with ammo. I know my Walther PPQ22 is. I only suggested the Walther P22 since you already have a Walther pistol so the feel, and geometry will be relatively similar. The Rugers seem to be much less picky with ammo by design.

I learned to shoot a pistol in college on a pistol team. Bought a Ruger Mk1 with fixed sights (couldn't afford the target model at $57.50) Now I have both, That was back in 1958 or so.

I have two Ruger mark 2 pistols. My grandson loves them. He has became pretty accurate shooting handguns but I take him out alot. He will shoot a couple hu dred rounds d each day we go shooting.

Go for a used 22 pistol, you won't break the bank and you can shoot hundreds of rounds for about what a box of fifty 9mm bullets would cost.
