20×102mm Vulcan
If the kid weighs 80 lbs., its not really a matter of manning up. He's physically going to have issues with a turkey gun, both in gun handling and recoil management.
Damn. I love recoil. That’s why I bought my gun in .30-06
No you may not. Cheeseburgers are for meMay i suggest also getting the kid a cheese burger and a gym membership.
What was loaded in the 20 gauge?
Just gradually move up from .22. A pistol caliber carbine would be a nice step up. 357 lever gun. That sort of thing.
I tried the gym membership because my wife and I have been going. He won't come. As for the cheeseburger add bacon and pickles and he's all over it.May i suggest also getting the kid a cheese burger and a gym membership.
That was my plan. He just won't agree to shoot it again. My younger son is dying to shoot it and I think will be ok shooting it. I think then maybe he will shoot it.Sorry haven't read through all of the posts so this may already have been covered. I'd personally take him out again with the 20. Have him "stretch" the gun as if it was a bow pulling back hard with trigger hand and pushing forward hard with support hand. This alone should absorb most of the felt recoil. You could also have him shoulder gun closer to center of chest than in shoulder pocket... more mass behind gun. My guess is he became afraid of gun because he was holding it lightly and was a few years younger. Explain everything to him before even going to a range and see how he takes to it. You could also use lighter target loads and a semi auto if you have access to one. Good luck!
Edit also make sure his stance is good. Trigger side leg should be set back a little and he should be leaning forward a bit. Stand behind him and place your hand on his back/shoulder behind gun and push in slightly as he fires. Again more mass to absorb any felt recoil...
