44 Mag Rifle?

Ah, Christmas is coming, and visions of ....

Anyway. Thinking of a rifle chambered in 44 mag and have pretty much boiled things down to a Henry lever, or the Ruger bolt. Any body have any experience with the Ruger 77/44? It seems to have fair regard, may be a little quirky, but any reason to pass on it?

A friend of mine has an old Ruger 44 carbine, it's his go to deer rifle now. He says it drops them on the spot! Me I would like the 77/44, I prefer a detachable mag as to a tube fed but the follow up shots would be quicker with a lever gun. What would really be the cats-meow would be a Ruger 96/44 best of both!

I have a Ruger Deerfield in .44. It’s my new Deer Rifle. I’m tired of getting beat up with the .308. Getting old sucks!

That is something we may see in the PCC as it evolves!

But I would also like to see the 96 line come back including in 357 magnum! ( I have a 96/22 fun gun and no tube feed )

I believe Marlin currently manufactures the 1894 in .44 magnum (Remlin production). I own a 1894 Marlin in .44 Connecticut vintage. Being a side port reload, you can reload on the fly with a partial tube fill. 10 round tube. Henry's are really nice with the exception of the end of tube refill function. I see Marlin 1894, .44 mag in the LGS lots of time.

Somehow my sister found a current production 1894C (.357) Marlin in Michigan, her boyfriend found it on line and helped her order it. I've not seen the 1894C in NY or had my FFL find any.

Without a side loading gate, The Henry is absolutely not an option for me. I'd take the Marlin or even a Rossi every time.

i have a 77/44, a 44 deerfield carbine, and a marlin 1894 in 44 mag...

all are great 100-150 yard deer guns.. great plinkers when loaded to 44 spl specs also

Couple of options, why not some lighter loads for the .308, reduced recoil?

if your going to go with a lighter recoiling load, then bigger metplat is more better

The 30-30 is so often overlooked these days innit?
Easier on the shoulder than a .308 yet more wallop than a .44 Mag.
But with a .44 rifle you can do the whole companion pistol thing, if that floats your boat.

The old Rugers were nice, 44 mag semi sounds like a blast. But I'm thinking something new. And there is definitely a following for the side loaders, but for me not an issue. And Remlins, I don't know, the whole deal with Remington and Marlin puts me off, maybe unfairly. I did handle an Uberti lever in 44 mag yesterday in Albania. It was finished very well...didn't get see a 77 though.

The 30-30 is so often overlooked these days innit?
Easier on the shoulder than a .308 yet more wallop than a .44 Mag.
But with a .44 rifle you can do the whole companion pistol thing, if that floats your boat.

You can have a 30-30 revolver.
