Can You Turbocharge Your .45? - The Mag Life

While this cartridge is not brand new it is newer than the 45 ACP and it can be fired from modern handguns with a change of the recoil spring.

Looks interesting but I am not sure I need to increase the recoil of my 1911 by 78%. Of course I don’t hunt anything but paper and steel so there isn’t a reason to demand 10mm performance from my 45s just yet.

I find it interesting they are using small rifle magnum primers in the 450SMC, in the late 90s we were using the small rifle magnum primers to get every ounce of power from the 38 super and it worked very well.

78% increase in recoil, whoooo-wee! Sounds like a pretty potent cartridge.

450 SMC 230gr Bonded Defense® JHP 20rds

So basically 9mm velocities in .45 bullet weights.

Now:

10mm 200gr. Controlled Expansion JHP 20rds.

'Bout 100 extra FPS with 30gr less bullet weight.

10mm and .450 SMC seem pretty equivalent.

Pretty much except this gets better velocities because of the redesigned case. The problem with naming it the 45 super is the same as the 300 whisper the creators legally claimed the name, meaning they would get royalties if anyone produces ammo or guns using it. Dooming the original cartridge name to die on the vine.

Almost. Same dimensions just small primer pockets.

Grip size. The current 1911 and double stack 1911 is the perfect size for my hand.

With the proper recoil spring installed the wear should be the same.

Been there done that in my usp. It’s basically a super. They claim any gun rated for +p will handle it fine. There is some disagreement on what the smc means in the name....

If I was dead set on carrying a 1911 with a 3 inch barrel, I would definitely do this so that the projectile is going at 1000 fps compared to 750 fps. It would make the projectile slightly faster than an ACP shot from a 5 inch barrel. The ACP wasn't designed to be shot from a 3 inch barrel at such an abysmal velocity. This SMC/ Super would remedy that and actually make the .45 effective.
