I got a pretty good deal on a case of 55 gr PPU which seems to run pretty well. I don't recall what I paid but it was a good deal from TSUSA. I'm no super sniper but it does what I want. I'd buy it again if the price is right.

I stock 3 types: 55gr M193 (typically IMI but whatever there is a good deal on) 64/62gr Gold Dots and 77gr Mk262 clones, again currently IMI but In will be conducting a series of tests in the spring to determine if there are better/more cost effective clones out there. In particular I wish to evaluate the Magtech version as I have heard very good things and it is very cost effective for the type.

I will be curious to hear your thoughts on Magtech, it does tend to be cost effective. My only real beef with them is their 124 9mm was literally the only cartridge (of any weight) that had any noticeable recoil in my AR9.

I can't speak to the Federal but I did get some very similar Fiocchi, which was pretty well priced. I wouldn't buy it in bulk I don't think; it was on sale but probably costs more per round at regular prices.

I've been picking up a 200rnd box of Winchester .223 for $58. each week or so. I should start buying some 9mm just for the fact it's so cheap now but I've got a couple of ammo cans filled with home loads.

This thread got me thinking. A 55 gr is probably better suited to stockpile for a regular Joe since it has a better terminal effect then a 62 or 77 grain at close distance within a hundred yards due to the greater velocity.
The higher grains are better suited for distance which I kind of don't see a regular Joe engaging in if the s*** hits the fan.
Those green tips were designed for the m249 saw and were issued to all weapons for logistical reasons

Any 55g fmj that I get a deal on. I'll run some through and see how it works, I've yet to have any issues with any brass cased ammo in my rifles.
As for accuracy any of these will hit an 6" plate at 300 yards without much effort, good enough for me if SHTF.

In general people will do fine with a 55gr fmj but if one wants an excellent defensive round the winchester 64gr PP bonded is a
popular one so for those patrol guys out there. Also the barnes 55gr and specially 62gr TTSX. very consistent if there is also
a need to shoot through objects like a wall, car doors or glass.
In terms of the 55gr that was originally designed to tumble with slow twist rates.
The only one that pretty much works as originally intended is the Norinco 55gr one could find 10 years ago that is so hard to find.
That one in modern rifles with 1-9 to 1-7 twist still tumbles like crazy unlike any other 55gr and as a result make a wound twice
the size in soft targets like small animals so one should expect the same in human torso. I am sad I didn't buy more of this
surplus at the time that was also dirt cheap.
Always keep in mind that because you have 55gr FMJ it doesn't mean it is faster. The fastest ammo is the Lake city NATO
spec (now obsolete) and many others will not be that fast. To give you an example the PMC bronze 55gr FMJ is about
300 fps slower from a 16" upper than the LAKE CITY nato (Case). Not all federal are the same and if you don't see
annealing most likely is loaded to 55kpsi unlike LC plant. American eagle I have seen in both versions, full power
that is the same as the LAKE CITY, from the same lines probably and the one w/o annealing that is pretty much
like the other Federal 55gr in small boxes.
If you are interested in any commercial round speeds, let me know because I have tested dozens of them with my own chrono.
Of course I cannot guarantee it will be the same as you can buy today as some change from year to year and even
batch to batch and so many news ones I have not tested nor even owned.
If you want to be able to defeat some of the body armor (up to a point) or even the hardest steel you need to
look into a more modern one like one solid or with a hardened tip or a M855(now obsolete from service) or
M855A1 (or equivalent). M193, even full power will fail. Not as catastrofically as the Blackout or AK rounds
but it will fail to go through hot rolled steel not even 1/4 thick.
Don't even try to test them like your old hated water heater or other things, because they ricochet like crazy
specially the AK ones and you want to come back home with the same amount of holes you had when you left home in the morning.
ABC = Always be careful.
