Makes sense to me. YMMV. Found on Western Rifle Shooters Association

Thats how we zeroed in the Army anyway. Well actually it was a simulated 50/200 zero done at 25 meters by bumping up the rear sight a bit at the zero range then bringing it back down at the 300 meter qual. range. Worked pretty well for the popups actually. Hold low on the 50 meter pop up and high on the 300 meter one. Center of mass for everything else, though holding a little high on the 250 meter pop up could give you a little more margin of error to work with. That article is wrong. The military still uses the 300 yards zero.
Yep. Red dot and irons suits a 50/225 yard zero. Anything longer than 300 yards with that zero, you aim for the head to get a chest shot.Yeah, when I read this originally, it simply yelled "red dot" to me.
I suck at range estimations.Yep. Red dot and irons suits a 50/225 yard zero. Anything longer than 300 yards with that zero, you aim for the head to get a chest shot.
For a scope, a 100 yard zero is the best. The tic marks will get you further.
Basically what is going on is that the flight path of the bullet intersects the line of sight at 50 and 200 yards. Out to about 300 yards or so if you just aim center of mass you may hit high or low but you will hit.let's just say for the sake of argument, Im as dumb-as-a-box -or-rocks. Please explain how a scoped rifle at 50 yards is dead nuts at 260 yards. Are they saying I can simply aim dead center at 260 and I should be in the 10 ring?
I thought most scopes were intended to be zeroed at 100 yards or else the stadia would be off?Yep. Red dot and irons suits a 50/225 yard zero. Anything longer than 300 yards with that zero, you aim for the head to get a chest shot.

This is really more of a quick and dirty zero for iron sights, or a red dot which is essentially just a fancier version of irons. At 50 and 200 yes you will be on the X. Slightly high at 100 and low after 200. This is a defensive mind set for zero. It allows the shooter to be relatively on target from 0 to over 200 yds. without scope adjustment. For precision shooting you will need to adjust your scope.

Yeah. That's why I said that.I thought most scopes were intended to be zeroed at 100 yards or else the stadia would be off?
Again, Inthought that for the reticle stadia to be accurate the scopenneeded to be zeroed at 100 meters? Or is that just for BDC reticles?Agreed. Also works well for the 1 X scopes. I use this zero with my vortex 1x6 with good results.
I'm soooooo confused!Yeah. That's why I said that.
What if they are standing in a foxhole?Zero at 25 and always aim for the belt buckle. Don't worry about the range!
It depends on the scope, but most of the ones that have the BDC reticles that I've seen are setup to be zeroed at 100.Again, Inthought that for the reticle stadia to be accurate the scopenneeded to be zeroed at 100 meters? Or is that just for BDC reticles?
While it's hard to imagine, from the moment that a bullet leaves the barrel, it is falling to the ground. If you shot a rifle dead level to the earth and someone dropped the same projectile at the exact same time, they'd both hit the ground at the same time. The one fired from the gun would simply do so hundreds of meters down range, the other at your feet.let's just say for the sake of argument, Im as dumb-as-a-box -or-rocks. Buy a rangefinderI suck at range estimations.
Or get a scope that has a crude one built in like an ACOG.Buy a rangefinder
Yep. Reading through all this. Podmonkey cracks me up "what if he's standing in a foxhole". HahaOr get a scope that has a crude one built in like an ACOG.
Enghhhhhh. Fixed power.Or get a scope that has a crude one built in like an ACOG.
