I only see the 45 GAP ( maybe the 25 auto too) dying. As long as gun manufacturers offer guns in all the other calibers they will hang on. It is kind of hard to kill a caliber which has been around over 50 years. Too many guns out there for them to drop the line all together.

Nope. There are also way to many new gun owners (even just because some one is finally old enough to buy something) that will see the dumb comment somewhere that .40stupidwesson is "the perfect combination of 9mm capacity and .45aarp stawping pawa"

When you see people still making dies, case forming and reloading martini henry rounds you realize that as long as reloading is an option no cartridge will ever die. Dead/obsolete calibers only applies to those who 100% buy factory ammo and would never consider reloading.

My .351 WSL is a dead/obsolete cartridge, yet I know at least 3 other people that have and shoot them. Same for the .33 Win. Same for the .219 Zipper. .22 Hornet. 5mm Rem. And the list goes on and on and on.

The .40 S&W isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Comic Book writers have to keep telling stories to sell magazines, and the Sponsors/Advertisers drive a lot of the content found there within.
Media loves putting out bombastic stories that drive people to keep buying them looking for mistakes they can point out.
NYSP Adopted the .45 GAP and was said by Troopers to be effective when lethal force was used, Bureaucrats touted the safety of having a Pistol that used special ammunition that was difficult to obtain on the open Market (while our Wholesalers did stock it, it was expensive and limited in flavors) In the end, the SP went back to 9mm Glocks and offered Troopers the chance to purchase their former Service Pistols at heavily discounted prices (apparently Glock and Dealer/Distributors didn't want them either)
.40 S&W was the greatest thing since gunpowder then one day "poof" it was to be shunned at every turn, can't hardly sell a .40 which is surprising, and about the only fault I find with the cartridge is bulging at the base of the case (special Die will take care of that) the parent round to the .40 is the 10mm and seems to me its been listed as a dead or dying cartridge too, but neither of them are discontinued or difficult to obtain in multiple loadings.
.32 be it ACP, S&W Short, Long, H&R magnum, .327 Federal, or even the new .30 Super (rimless .327) is a fine little cartridge when properly applied; the short and Long have been around since the late 1800's and while probably isn't as popular in current sales, its not dead. Cowboy Action shooters love the .32 round.
.25acp Say what you want, the round has been made for a century, and while not all that powerful, bullets have vastly improved, and damned if I want to be shot with one...people have and DO die from being shot with it, and the "Shovel" story is just so much bullshit.
.41 Mag. Those that love it, love it, most others could care less...It's a good cartridge, but there aren't a lot of Bullet choices compared to .357 or .429 which is the nitch it was supposed to fill....it's a little more powerful than the 10mm and a lot more than the .41 Action Express from IMI.

Gabe Suarez is an excellent source of facts from someone that HAS been in multiple shoot-outs, and HAS used Lethal Force, and IIRC he quoted to the effect that the only "one shot stop" was from a 9mm. (quote not found in link)

The .41 magnum has been declared dead more times than I can count and yet they still make them. Bullets are available from 170 grains to 295 grains. It's only my opinion but at realistic ranges the .41 doesn't give up anything to the .44. Own them both and shoot them both so I think I can realistically compare them.

Like @ArmedCorgi I have done the conversion on my M&P 40SW to 9mm. And I have seen when we have these ammo shortages 40sw seems to be the last ammo off the shelves, so a simple barrel change and I'm good to go with 40sw

The .40 isn't dead and won't die, but it will recede into niches. Few new buyers will buy a .40 S&W. The only big manufacturers still making handguns in the chambering are Glock and S&W. These things, I think, will keep the .40 from vanishing:

-- Self-defense: It's a moderate recoil round that can reliably penetrate 12+" with a bullet expanding to 0.6"+. Especially in capacity restricted states, the only tradeoff with 9mm is slightly more recoil for a slightly bigger maximum possible expanded diameter. Compared to .45 I'd say it's also a wash and just depends on what gun you would prefer.

-- Competition: Like others have mentioned — major power factor.

-- Handloaders: I think .40 is the most versatile common cartridge in a small-frame autoloader just like the 10mm is the most versatile in a large-frame autoloader. Again, it can easily and economically make major. With a slow-burning powder like Longshot, 800-X, or a few others, it can meet or beat almost all 10mm offerings from big-name ammo-makers like Federal, Hornady, Sig, Speer, or Winchester without exceeding published maximums and SAAMI max pressure. It's not something I'd ever try, but some people have hotrodded it to within 100 fps of full Buffalo Bore or Underwood 10mm power.


Personally, if I could only have one handgun it would probably be a Glock 23. Even not being limited to one handgun, I've still prefered the .40 caliber Glocks 35 and 23, since they let me have the more powerful round while being able to swap barrels and mags to have the 9mm.

I carry a .32 acp.. ammo is basically unavailable locally, but no problem online if you don't mind paying $50 a box.. I was ahead of the game, seeing the writing on the wall.. A few years ago, I was buying very good Geco ammo at $10 a box online.. I bought about 1200 rounds.. Just recently scored another 10 boxes, at $21 a box from a pa. retailer that had them sitting on his shelf for years and never sold a box.. I don't shoot my .32 guns much as I can't easily replace the ammo.. Its not dead yet, but IS starting to smell funny....
