He is actually claiming that their EMS never used to carry tourniquets? WTF? How exactly did they stop bleeding when someone was hemorrhaging from a wound to a limb?

TQ have for a long time been taboo, I have an ems/emt buddy who is working NYC and only recently thanks to stop the bleed have they started going to TQ and carrying and using them.

Up until recently they have been considered "last resort" but new knowledge and doctrine is now teaching they are best when used first and fast

I've been out of EMS for 7-8 years now, after an 18-year career.

We carried windlasses on our ambulances for improvised tourniquets for as long as I could remember, but were always trained to use them as a last resort. At least in my agency, everybody was trained in their "proper" (for the time) application.

The big push in the last several years to get them on the streets into the LE/Fire/EMS community has actually come come from the military via folks coming back from the ME.

Tourniquet use by EMTs has been part of the Standard of Care by the National Registry of EMTs (which is in use by Florida) and by the NYS Department of Health since 2016.

Seems like every civilian first aid book says to apply a tourniquet if there's serious bleeding that can't be controlled by direct pressure.
