7mm-08 for hunting and long range precission shooting

I just finished shooting a nice upper at the range.

The stock barrel is a Krieger 5R in 1:8 twist.
Caliber 7mm-08.
Length is 22.5" measured from the shank.

New ammo is coming out with bullets more in line with the true capabilities of this round.
This one should be very good. Hornady might not release the 162gr because otherwise some might see the 6.5 Creedmore
shorthanded vs. the 7mm and that is where the marketing hype and dollars are now.

The plan is to work more in the 168gr berger to replicate this load but first we will dial on the 162gr amax/eld.

IMO a 5lbs AR10 is too light for the task unless using very light loads or 243 but that can use a larger barrel.
6-7 lbs loaded would be very handy still and cheaper to build. 308w light profile barrels are plentiful or
one could do a 7mm-08 in 18 or 19 inches too.

Regarding the Amax it is an excellent hunting bullet for soft skin game like deer, mountain goat, etc... The expectation is that the ELD will behave
the same as it is same construction.
However one should not use 6mm or 6.5mm Amax becuase they are too light.
The 6mm maxes out at 105-107gr.
The 6.5mm maxes out at 140gr.
These would work great at average ranges and obviously depending on the animal. The 6mm is a bit on the light side but still good for goats
and other critters at long range.
Since these bullets rely on fragmentation there is simply not enough mass to guarantee penetration. Amax will create a broad wound but as distance
increases and speed decreases it will need the momentum (mass) to effectively put more penetration.
This is where the 7mm and 30 caliber are perfect for it. The 7mm 160gr to 175gr match bullets are perfect for lung /heart shots even at very long
distances. Same thing with the 30 caliber 168gr amax. The thing is the 7mm that is in 162gr amax is substantially superior in terms of ballistics
so it delivers more energy and momentum and it is easier to make contact.
The whole philosoply behind match bullets is that they can reach far away and also activate at lower impact speeds. The amax is very good at this.
Other premium hunting bullets like the berber VLD hunting can also do a great job. They are also based on match bullet construction.
But others like lets say the accubond long range will need a minimum impact speed above 1800fps so while ballisticaly they are very good this
impacts on their effectivness.
I guess everthing has to be considered starting with the animal, distance and then see what bullets and what kind of barrel and charge one
needs to do it accuratelly and efficiently.
In most situations many average bullets will work really well since the long range is not the usual way of hunting and most likely people hunting
long range will hunt with magnum cartriges for extra assurance. But it can be done with good training and understanding.

Bottom line the Amax and ELD are good bullets to have at hand for the 7mm and 308.

I also love the 6.5mm 123gr amax for the 6.5BR and the AR15. Not for hunting this one but true 1000 yards paper or chucks or to hunt at
average distances with other bullets and plenty of power.

I was studying MAX COAL for the chamber and one could have about 80-100 thousands to play with depending on the magazine or if one decides to single feed for extreme long range one day.

I have a Howa 1500 in 7mm-08. Damm good shooter right out of the box (with a scope added). Only wish the ammo were cheaper.

howa gives a great value with their rifles. I like their mini action.
The 7-08 ammo is priced comparably to all the other popular cartridges like 243, 260, 270, etc...
Look for the bulk and/or season deals.

Oh this is bringing back cravings I had for one of these last year. I would give a left nut for a AR in 7mm-08 .One of the best calibers I owned was this in a Rem BDL. After many hours finding a load it like and a bedding job in the stock it was one of the best shooting rifles I have owned.Well It was the best up until I bought a Creedmore a couple weeks ago. Like a idiot ,a good friend just had to have the BDL so I sold it to him . Kicked myself in the ass many times for that sale

Do you have a 5 axis CNC milling machine? Or did you order a barrel to be made to your specifications by someone else that does?

Just using an old barrel. This will be done by a professional gunsmith.

Minor fixes like bad sights, installing scopes, threading something, etc. Some customization but nothing too complex. I reload very slowly. It is a time to reflect. For something critical or high end I like a gunsmith.

BTW I would love to tackle wood work. I jut don't have the space and tools right now.
I have a design idea for a wood modular stock with all the advantages of modern stocks but the beauty of wood.
...some day... lets hope...

that sounds great. For the modular stock I have in mind one doesn't need a huge mill since it will come down in 2 or 3 pieces
