While thumbing through Instatram, I see on Militar Arms Channel Tim keeps posting size comparisons of completely unrelated, extremely dissimilar guns. Mainly of the definitive arms DASA (bolt action pistol in rifle caliber, similar to the new Remington 700 pistol).

Well someone poised the made the comment about seeing testing to find out the best caliber for such a small barrel. And other than 300blk (such a favorite on here) he mentioned the 8.6 being developed by "Q"

So I got to googling and well here we are (looks like they are trying to get something that outperforms .308 within 300 yards)

I wonder if it will take off or not

Not to hijack but I went down the link rabbit hole, Q's "Fix" rifle looks interesting. I don't know if it's 3 grand interesting (for me) but nonetheless.

Not a hijack at all, I have never heard of Q but if they make cool zhit then that adds to my intrest

On topic, If I lived in America, I would be tempted by this new cartridge if it performs and is readily available. 12.5" barrel with a suppressor and pistol brace- yes please. I guess time will tell. I didn't see if there was any head to head comparison but out to 300 yards, suppressed, I would be interested on seeing head to head specs with .308, which appears to be what they're aiming for here?

IMO,
Fashions, fancy names and marketing aside, No matter how one looks at this, it becomes a game of tradeoffs.
The AR15 is very well balanced below 7mm and then it stops. Only when it comes to 35 or 375 calibers starts to make sense again.
Then above that caliber one can send even heavier bullets but they are a disaster ballistically talking and make the AR more like a shotgun.
I am referring to the bullets than one can actually fit in the restricted space of the magazine.

The best balance for the AR I find it in the 6mm and then the 270 because of the great bullets designed for compact cartriges like the 6.8
The 35 caliber will give the most punch with still decent ballistics.

The 30 caliber and 338 do not make much sense due to the lack of bullet assortment.

In the AR10/308 AR the 7mm-08 will do everything any other caliber, 6mm, 6.5mm, 30 caliber.

It outperforms all of them, including the 308 itself. The beautiful part is already invented. The shoulder angle is the same
as the 308. Any cartridge with a 30 degree shoulder angle or higher is an automatic no-no for a service bound round.

The 308 with modern solid / CNC bullets it also outperforms itself yet rarely people talk about this. It makes the 308 all more attractive
because it optimizes the use of bullets giving similar trajectories to the 6.5mm and 6mm that get max out quickly in terms of grain/length ratio.

In the subsonic world a 35 remington (like the gunner) could be fitted to toss up to 320gr bullets. The 375 is a great one too but the problem
is the lack of bullets for subsonic work. So more folks will lean in the more plentiful and cost efficient 9mm/357/358 bore.
