You are right about the cop but once in a crime lab, the charge will go away. There is no way that a professional crime lab will think that you defaced a Glock when it's a totally different gun to begin with that has a permanent rail where the serial number is supposed to be. Remember, New Yorkers aren't going to be using Polymer 80's. You really can't unless registered on your permit. It'll be free staters that'll use them and many do. It's popular over there.

Contrary to popular “we’re far superior than cops” belief, cops are no different than the general public when it comes to guns. At any given moment there will be a few who know guns and a few who don’t. The gun crowd clearly knows more about guns than the general public. Cops clearly know more about processing arrests than the general public. It’s comparing apples to oranges to expect that cops in general would know as much as gun buffs do about firearms.
Again, contrary to populsr belief, most cops will never use their firearm in the course of their career. It’s a misconception that cops need to be firearms experts, which leads to thinking those who aren’t are dumb and in dereliction.
When an arrest comes in, especially for a gun, there will be quite a few people involved. The gun crowd’s wet-dream of the know-nothing cop won’t happen because first, 99% who don’t know what they have are smart enough to ask someone else, and those who don’t ask will most likely end up during the process having to deal with one who does.
No one just says, “welp, looks like every gun charge possible here, let’s do it!” before sealing a bag and filling out overtime slips.
That belief comes from reading news articles filtered through reporters who know less about guns than the average 2 year old, then mistakenly believing that what is written down is word for word what the cops said.
