I plan on changing to Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P for my defensive rounds. I was curious to know if anyone knows of some training ammo that is very similar ballistics wise to it? I do know Speer has the Lawman that is supposed to be for this type of thing. They have two 124gr options, a clean-fire and a standard version on their website (#53824, and #53651), I don’t know if they are both the same with their ballistics. Also curious if there are any other cheaper alternatives besides the Lawman? Or if anyone on here has more knowledge on ballistics and training ammo; and knows of any reason why I should go with a different weight 115gr or 147gr offerings for training?

I cant comment on the ballistics per se but I buy and use the Lawman in 124, it is very adequate for my purposes.

I think at defensive pistol ranges the differences between POI for different ammo is irrelevant.
95grn and 147grn 9mm even are going to end up hitting the same spot at anything under 25 yards.
Defensive shooting is going to be very hard to justify legally any further.

Recoil impulse is the only factor that you should consider for training ammo. At a few feet, poi changes are negligible and not really worth considering.
124 gr FMJ NATO for me had the same recoil impulse as defensive ammo. When using cheap shit like blazer ammo, you could tell the difference in recoil with it compared to defensive ammo.

I kind of figured that was going to be the consensus. I didn’t think there would be a drastic difference in poa/poi amongst the different offerings. But I figured I would ask anyway. So it seems 124gr Lawman or some NATO, whichever is going to be the cheapest at the time. Thanks guys!
In terms of recoil feel I find the 124gr Winchester NATO load to be very similar in feel to my Federal HST +p carry ammo. Its pretty cheap too.
NATO 9mm loads are equivalent to lower end +p loads in general but not super hot either.
That said for general range use I stick to standard pressure loads to save on wear and tear.
As far as POI changes it depends on the gun sometimes, and it can be significant even at close range by a few inches. I have noticed that my Glock 19 is remarkably consistent in this regard over a wide range of ammunition types as is my Walther PPQ. My M&P Shield however does exhibit some shift depending on the ammo.

I have that same exact ammo as of right now.
I like it. I did have a round that didn't fire once though. It had a solid primer strike but never went bang. I'm not sure if it's a good idea to try again so I just ejected it and moved on with my life. It's cheap. Seems to run pretty clean though. I also have Remington UMC .40SW in bulk and that is much dirtier. That also failed to fire once.
