A friend of mine gave me a lefty Springfield 30-06 I don't know the model offhand but I am not sure what to do with it since I am a righty and live in the city to boot.

Keep it to remember your friend. I have a few guns I don’t use. Ones an old double barrel that’s not safe to shoot but it was my grandfather’s so I keep it.

If the rifle is exchanged in Pennsylvania it's perfectly legal.
IF it was done in PA, it is legal to gift to, but NOT legal for him to bring it into NYC without the proper permits. He can do as he wishes, I'm just pointing out the legalities of/in NYC.

As @kev74 stated I believe the same about members here. However, perhaps I missed them, but I saw no firearm related posts in the original posters "conversation history" and wanted to ask the question about laws associated with firearms in NYC. @RooftopKorean confirmed my thoughts about those laws.

You still need to register any long gun you purchase or get transferred to you if you plan on keeping them in the city limits.

I’m a moderator on another forum and a guy posted for sale an illegal firearm so I deleted it and reached out to him about why I deleted it and explained if he was LE or in PA fine but specify it.
I get why people post and ask what’s legal or what’s not because it’s hard to keep up these days and I don’t want anyone to get jammed up but yes I assume people are law abiding in their purchase of guns.
