A request from the cityfolk

) . I browsed extensively and I'm pretty certain this is the appropriate section for this. So my friend and I just graduated college a few days ago, and we've lived in NYC our whole lives. I don't need to tell anyone about the commie laws in this city; but either ways we found ways to go to out to the range as often as we could (LI Shooting Center in Islip, RTSP in New Jersey, hunting upstate, and a couple of others). But these places charge an arm and a leg for ammo, and they're pretty restrictive indoors. Now what I going to ask was: would anyone who owns semi long guns or pistols either in LI or upstate be willing to go to the range with us. We would be willing to share our ammo (I've never had trouble buying upstate) with you. We've both shot plenty in the past, so we're pretty anal (lol) about safety. Only thing is, we don't really look like what you would expect a typical gun enthusiast would (if you catch my drift), but that has never been a problem at a range. We're both very friendly red blooded Americans (now this sounds like a Tinder ad). I'm more than willing to answer any question that you will obviously have.

As a firearms instructor in a past life, I’ve taught kids through folks in their 80s. Businessmen and hippie appearing folks alike. welcome to the forum. here is my suggestion.

reach out to @OnSight Firearms Training and see about signing up for a shotgun class with them. I believe they offer rentals (iirc). That would be money well spent, you would get a real education while also getting a full day of shooting in.

Now, if you live in the city, you should look into getting a shotgun permit (yeah, it sucks), or look to move just outside the city where you can walk into a gun shop and buy a longgun without a permit as long as you can pass a federal background check.

It appears your looking to meet up with people from upstate to shoot their guns using your ammo. Me personally, I don't really shoot with strangers unless its in a controlled setting like a class.

yeah @Celt pretty much addressed what I was trying to say. My friend and I basically wanted to meet up with someone to shoot their guns with our ammo. I'm sure the shotgun class is wonderful, but I was more hoping for someone with a semi-auto long rifle. And I can't apply for a NYC permit because I'm gonna move to large university in mid long island to start a Ph.D program in August, and I'm gonna live on campus, so yeah.

In hindsight I guess it is asking for a bit much for a stranger.

Also don't forget semi auto long guns are heavily restricted in this state. Because of this most people here are bitter and skeptical about inquiries about them. Let's not church it up a gun enthusiast in N.Y. is as ostracized as a black person in the south in the 50's.

Congrats on graduating and getting into a PHD program.
NOW, It is asking much. In NY it is illegal for anyone over 21 to handle another persons handguns. Legality’s outta the way.
Your asking for someone to trust you with their guns. I trust very few people. I would never trust someone I never met. Especially, someone who posted ( with their first post never the less ) about shooting my guns.

So, OP and his friend resides in NYC. They don't own any firearms because...

1.) they haven't applied for a NYC firearm permit (long gun or hand gun) or
2.) they can't get a permit.

Asking to shoot a friend's or relative's rifle that knows you is one thing. But asking to meet a stranger from the internet to allow you to shoot his gun is reaching.
Especially in today's anti-gun society you want to shoot another's man's semi-auto rifle (AR15... ) ?

Many of us are seasoned gun owners and have seen/ read a lot of things... everything from fatal range accidents to people that are nuts.

For me, I won't even hunt with a stranger until I get to know his/her hunting/ shooting/safety skills.

I wouldn't allow anyone I didn't know to shoot my rifles unless he allowed me to stand behind him with a gun pointed at his head and even that's foolish.

What's to stop a stranger from loading your weapon and committing a crime.

Well there you go, that was that. A no would've sufficed, but I appreciate the answers anyway. @BDinPutnam , I don't know what in the fuck a PH D is, I think you meant Ph.D. And no, it's not in grammar (i don't know if there is one), it's in chemistry. @Willjr75 , whats to stop you from loading your weapon and committing a crime. I wasn't asking to take anyone's rifle and start sending rounds downrange. Obviously I would introduce myself and you would only go to the range with me once you got to know me. You know, how people communicate in real life.

Judging from people's tone here, no wonder a tiny city can rule and trample all over a massive state, and there is nothing people do except dress up for costume parties at the capital and lose more elections.
